I have been working at Xerox full-time for more than a year

Pros

This is for the West Sacramento office: Easy parking; publications department were an exquisite group of talented, professional individuals; its leadership is smart and savvy (leads, supes and Manager).

Cons

None, really...except that when I tried to move to another department, the HR rep was aloof and disassociated, and not really willing to assist.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your employees more! They are paying 1990s salaries in the 2010s.

    Pros

    Going through a transition from hardward centric to business process management and there are some great synergies between these directions. HUge opportunities to integrate people and processes that were acquired into mainstream Xerox.

    Cons

    CEO (Ursula Burns) was recently rating the most hated CEO in AMerica. She shorten vacations, stopped raises, lowered bonuses, and dramtically cut the health care benefits. Employee moral is not great becuase of this, but company seems to have potential so most people are hanging in there for now.

    Get a new CEO.

    Some work life balance. Great co-workers.

    Cons

    The outsourcing strategy is a bust, plain and simple. The agreement with HCL (engineered by Wim Appelo and Charlie Gardiner) has already cost Xerox millions of dollars in lost revenue as their engineers are not capable of doing R&D work. The damage has been done as too many critical resources have left the company. Xerox is now below critical mass on the product development side. It's HCL or bust and it looks like it's going to be bust because they supply Xerox with junior engineers who do not posess the skill necessary to do product development.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Advice to the board: Your senior management team is dysfunctional from Ursula Burns all the way down to the division Presidents. Time to have some accountability discussions and consider cleaning house. At at time when other US companies are discovering that outsourcing doesn't work, Xerox is escalating its efforts to do even more. Product development will be a thing of that past in less than 2 years. The senior management team knows that bad decisions have been made but are incapabile of dealing with the realities of it. Total heads in the sand on product development.

    Additional advice to the board: The next CEO should have a clue about innovation. Innovation is the only way out of the current decline we're seeing in pages printed. Xerox needs to re-invent itself on the product development side, not cripple the R&D budgets with spending cuts and an outsourcing strategy that has no chance of working. Sure, pursue a healthy Services Business, but don't give up on Technology. You have to have products and an strong engineering department or else you've got nothing to sell. Xerox engineering, under Mark Enzien and Rick Dastin, has seen the most pathetic environment for innovation in the history of the Fortune 100.
