Pros

Provides a good work life balance. I still work for a old timer boss hence life is still good. Technology is pretty interesting to work with. Lot of good engineers around however many are leaving.

Cons

New management is a turn-off. Too much politics in last five years. Too many committees and discussion but very little decision making. Marketing is very incompetent dragging down the company. Only politicians get promoted.

Advice to Management

Work on a true facts driven method and decision making. Get a new marketing team all together. Do whatever it takes to retain good engineers and kick out the managers (too many of them).

    Pros

Health insurance, salary, it beats the unemployment line.

    Cons

No communication, no employee empowerment, micromanagement, screwed up priorities. We used to look for the best way to do things, now the focus is how to do things with the least number of people. There is no trust between groups, and there are multiple organizations splintering and doing things their own way. Even when there was a "Leadership Council" dedicated to getting senior members of the company together to unify us, that also failed. A year ago things were good but looking shaky...in an effort to fix things management has made it a terrible situation getting worse.

    Advice to Management

You're bleeding talent. If the economy/job market turns around, you're sunk, since most employees would rather be somewhere else. When you came on board, you found inefficiencies and problems, but don't forget who built up that cash reserve you're sitting on. Let your employees think creatively and explore options.

  2. Poor management surviving on the legacy of quality engineering from 5+ years ago...

    Pros

The best reason to work for Xilinx is that the company, for the time being, makes a good profit on its core products. This, in theory, provides a stable financial base for your employment.

    Cons

The quality of the managment hierarchy at the company has been deteriorating for the last 4 years and, even with the injection of a new CEO, the culture and morale of the company is at a real low. The net effect is that a lot of the high quality talent is fleeing because the opportunities for career growth are all but gone.

    Advice to Management

Fix the managment hierarchy - the engineering morale won't improve until there is a decent, creative managment structure. You won't be able to rely on the labor dynamics of a poor economy forever...
