I have been working at Xyratex

Pros

Scrappy little company. The people there work hard. The facilities at some locations are very good and include nice little benefits like excellent espresso machines and open space to sit and collaborate.

Cons

This company seems to be thrashing. Disk drives are a commodity, and they really seem to need to move into the next big thing.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ramp up the commitment to employees. Clear out the deadwood, reward and recognize the ones you want to keep with benefits they see as motivating. Offer more learning and development opportunities for your people, and move your infrastructure at all sites into this decade.

I have been working at Xyratex

    Pros

Lots of hard-working rank and file. If senior leadership is replaced with top-flight US execuitives, the company could really fly! Havant is not where it's happening, but it's still "headquarters".

    Cons

UK headquarters are behind the times. Nothing innovatives comes out of Havant. Aging IBMers who live in a vacuum are the rule in Havant, UK. They just don't get it when it comes to investing in systems and processes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please replace the current executive leadership team in Havant. They are truly unqualified for their roles. They are ostriches with their heads in the sand and see change as too strenuous. Additionally, high tech innovation won't be coming out of the UK anytime soon or ever!

    I worked at Xyratex

    Pros

    1) Close to home.
    2) Short commute to work.
    3) Some fun people to work with.

    Cons

    1) Management infighting.
    2) Complete lack of direction and support from upper to executive management.
    3) Very low employee morale.
    4) Stifling environment for bright and talented ideas.
    5) "Sneak attack" approach on company announcements.
    6) High costs spent due to poor management, direction and structure within company.
    7) Poor environment for growth or advancement.
    8) Reporting managers are spread all over the world with too many employees and too little time to actually manage you.
    9) Hibernation management style. Only come out when they need to, otherwise you would wonder if your boss is dead.
    10) Mentality that the United Kingdom is headquarters and therefore any decisions only come from that side.
    11) Many clueless individuals in the United Kingdom that do not know how to open doors and work with other individuals.
    12) Poor hiring practices. Hire individuals on board without really knowing what they want to do with that individual and or team.
    13) Lack of vision for future.
    14) Heavily resistant to change. Very fearful!
    15) Working for this company will not advance your career. It's more of like working in a vegetative state.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire a outside strategy consultant, fire some or all of upper management and replace with individuals who know what they're doing. If upper management doesn't have vision and can effectively communicate and implement this within middle management and to individual contributor roles then they have no business being employed. It all starts at the top!
