I have been working at YMCA full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Free membership and discounted program fees.

    Cons

Long hours, including many evenings and weekends. Constantly working (email, phone calls) and compensation definitely does not reflect this. Responsibilities get dumped on you by senior leadership and there's little to no appreciation for the time and efforts you put into your work. There is not a good work-life balance. The Y likes to think they're a superior employer by offering generous PTO but then you can never take/use it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to genuinely listen to your Program Directors. They're the ones working the front lines (with their part time staff). They have the best insight as to what's going well and what's not. Don't assume and then make executive decisions that negatively affect the programs and operations.

    Pros

You get paid to have fun and learn with the kids. The Y also offers great training sessions (when the funds are available).

    Cons

Communication throughout the Y is not very efficient.
