Pros

You will likely work with a bunch of people your own age. It's a built in peer group. Not to mention, you're playing games all day and getting paid for it. Not a bad combination.

Cons

Kids can be a handful at times, so if you aren't a generally cheery person, this may not be the job for you. Having a full 15:1 ratio for a week can be stressful.

Advice to Management

Get everyone on the same page. While there are rules and regulations about how the camp should run, they are rarely followed, and can cause confusion and conflict.

    Pros

Working with children is extremely rewarding and presents unique experiences and challenges every day. They do a great job of hiring young, energetic counselors who are fun people to work with. Great summer job for high school or college students

    Cons

The YMCA does not have the funding that many other organizations have for summer camp due to their dedication to including children from all types of backgrounds. The counselor to camper ratio is often at the legal maximum which can be stressful to manage especially when that includes children with disabilities.

  2. It was overall an enjoyable experience

    Pros

Great Co-workers, patrons where great and always nice to talk to. Management is very understanding.

    Cons

Repeated days with hours on end of not having a break for more than 5 or 10 min a shift. Too short staffed during many shifts so ended up guarding for multiple hours on end with minimal breaks.

    Advice to Management

Hire more lifeguards, one guard up for more than an hour is Un-safe for the people in the water. People are not robots and need a break every so often in order to keep there vigilance at its best. Keep a rotating guard on the schedule during all times.
