I have been working at YMCA full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The Y is a great place to work if you have a spouse who makes a real salary. As a program manager, hours are flexible. Staff and members are friendly.

    Cons

There is no room for growth. Upper management refuses to invest in employee development for fear that they will leave. Extremely short-sighted view with a top heavy salary infrastructure. No cost of living raises for nearly a decade, and group exercise instructor's wages are frozen at $9-$10 per class. Part-time staff will rarely make over minimum wage unless they're the head guard. The Y is not the place to work full-time if you have an inkling of ambition. Heavy emphasis on scholarship campaign without a second thought to underpaid, undervalued staff. Execs force program directors to solicit payroll deductions from minimum wage employees to reach their campaign goal. Poor business decisions and an overall unsatisfactory employer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your staff and think long-term. Invest and value your employees to decrease employee turnover.
