I worked at YMCA

Pros

Very good at offering opportunities for growth to employees. Free membership to all full time employees and their families to all YMCA membership centers in network. Many departments to choose from and you are able to network with other YMCA's across the country. This was very helpful and useful.

Cons

Very heavy on the politics. The YMCA of Metro Chicago is totally based on politics and it seeps into everyday work life. Who ever is in power is not to be questioned, if so, you will be terminated without cause. Many good people at the Y, but they are scared to say anything because the climate is one rife with politics and a strong "gotch er" mentality. This was a sobering life lesson for people like me who want to help others just for the sake of it.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember why you first joined the movement, It was to do good and live by the YMCA's core values. You need to be true to yourself and not be so consumed with "who are you' throwing under the bus today' The YMCA is a good organization overall, don't let people who do not fully understand the message destroy it.

    Pros

One of the great reasons to work for the YMCA is that it offers a wide variety of areas that you can learn and grow in.

    Cons

Depending on the size of your organzation and financial situation, being able to multi-task and handle many areas is something that someone new in this field will have to learn and get use to.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management/leadership must continue to develop there employees and provide a clear outline on the things he or she should work on in their development to aspire to a higer level withing the organazation.

    Pros

Kids fun ot work with. You get to assist in homework and see the developing in the kids all year long.

    Cons

The management is poorly administered. There is only authority when someone is to blame or something goes wrong. There is much cadiness.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen with open ears and try to advise in the lower employees because they are the ones eessentially with the kids.
