Too many changes at the top in the last 5 years, but still got life.

Pros

Despite the attrition, the engineers there are smart and passionate. You have the opportunity to learn to solve scalability problems that few companies have to deal with. The recent instability has created career opportunities for those who aggressively seek it.

Cons

The revolving door at the executive level in the last 5 years have made it impossible to execute on any strategic plans, because every new CEO or C-Level executive will reorg and disrupt everything that was in motion.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the executive shuffle. No single executive, organizational makeup, or development methodology is the magic bullet to solving Yahoo's problems. Let people iterate on product experiences to make them better incrementally instead of trying to do some huge change every year.

    Pros

As long as things are moving smoothly your schedule is fairly loose and you are free to come and go as you like. The people I worked with were all in the same boat and always were supportive and eager to work with each other

    Cons

With the financial situation they are in it seems they are simply not interested in investing in good talent. Also they went from having their fingers in too many pies to having their finger in just one pie hoping it would work but with no real back up for if/when it fails.

I have been working at Yahoo full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great Benefits and culture.

Pro for some people: this is one company that you can get rewarded and promoted for failed projects.

    Cons

Poor Management - investing in products that have no ROI or revenue gain - lack of directions for the teams. Decisions tend to be made more for personal gains than what is best for the company.

Too many academics and few think out of the box or care about the business of making money. Lot's of inventions and ideas but no ROI. It's sad to say this.... a billion dollar company that don't know how to develop software. Lot's of talk about technology but none on monetize them.

Lots of failed projects - a failed project is one that does not work better than the previous versions, no addition ROI, users don't like it, and is not stable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Why? They don't listen or understand. Need smarter and more brave management.
