Pros

Benefits and salaries are very competitive. Environment is great. Not too stiff. It's amazing to work with some of the most talented and intelligent people in the industry. A great place to grow professionally. free coffee. awesome training and development opportunities. the most amazing and engaging conversations I've ever had in any job. Great people! Amazing energy at this company!

Cons

can never keep anything straight with all the re-orgs and projects dying and being created. difficult to follow or understand the direction different teams or management is going. Too many politics and hidden agendas.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

focus on a small set of products and deliver amazing results rather than trying to work on many things and doing an okay job at all of them. Take the approach that Apple has over recent years and focus on a small set of things and deliver an amazing product!

    Pros

Big challenges and big ambitions - before the Microsoft deal came crashing down. The engineering problems are hard and Yahoo! is still a place where the sheer number of users means that the all problems have scale implications rarely found elsewhere.

The culture was fun and irreverent. Smart engineers building good software. Healthy relationship with India offices. Reasonable handling of companies that were acquired - except Overture, which should have been cleaned up nearly as soon as it was bought.

    Cons

Matrix org structure killed ability to move/decide or make decisions. Senior management was often a joke - both ways: senior and management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The engineers in the trenches know what's going on. Ask them, root out the crap.

Good people in the trenches, but too much uncertainty.

I have been working at Yahoo

    Pros

Very smart people, with a culture of bottom's up innovation. There are still some pockets of creativity where interesting things are happening. The level of pride and company identification is very high: people take "wearing the purple" pretty seriously

    Cons

The culture has decayed over the last 5 years, as the old guard has gotten complacent, then retired. Yahoo never recovered from losing the search war to google, and the company morale reflects it. Constant reorganizations and people shuffling mean that there's really no career path.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop reorganizing. Start prioritizing. Stop doing so much, start doing somethings better. Focus people on high-priority projects, and spend the time to kill off low priority projects. Start explaining what the long-term company strategy is.
