I have been working at Yahoo full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Agree with some latest comments. Good talent, salary. Good going for now. Champaign is a small site so the general fear of something bad happening persists. With expansion projects things will get better.

    Cons

Layoffs have not been consistent with performance. Impacts morale. Surprised that some non-technical managers and directors continue to be around. Politics at top level is bad for long term success.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Administration oriented directors need to be replaced by techie management.

I worked at Yahoo full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Salary, bonus, easy life. Being in Champaign one is not expected to be producing out of the world results. Low expectations that are easily met. Work is okay, good enough to beef up my resume.

    Cons

Work is slow and not that great. Hadoop and Cloud technologies are well advertized but a closer look will tell you that most engineers are fixing bugs.

Pros are the biggest con. I ruined quite a few years of my career working for managers and especially the directors at Champaign site. Managers have no real control over their teams, all is dictated by the Directors. Some other reviews also mention this and is true that these Directors are technically incompetent and use their political influence to keep themselves at the top. Somehow it has worked for quite a few years. The decision makers in HQ do not want to change them to keep a smooth sailing impression. These Directors have ruined quite a few careers by initially hiring people who were not a good fit for the job, but hiring them allowed to meet their hiring quota. Then they fired some of these people on account of poor performance - of course a bad fit will not perform well. So on both occasions Directors come on top, first by meeting their hiring quota and then when the company was looking to trim, they got rid of the same people. Ironically and ridiculously, some of the same people were hired yet again as part of site growth agenda.

There are three distinct groups of Champaign Yahoos. First with the ones that came in bulk from Motorola. They are the older people. They stick together and take care of each other. Some are good. Difficult to break into this group. Second group is in Champaign because their spouses are in the area for employment. These people are the most political ones and will do anything to hang on to their dear jobs. Group three is made up of independent Yahoos who think they can make a career and living in Champaign.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Some other reviews suggested to fire the directors. Right-on. You do not need them. New technical managers can handle the site well.
