I worked at Yahoo

Pros

yahoo had a lot of smart, motivated people and a great audience, it was a fun and challengeing place to work until the bureaucracy got too big and bloated

Cons

sadly, what you read is true about yahoo. the senior leadership is out to lunch, busy politicking and building feifdoms while yahoo struggles

Advice to ManagementAdvice

managment should lay off about 50% of themselves

I have been working at Yahoo

    Pros

The Y! brand and get to work on interesting projects. There are many great, super smart people. The company has some amazing web properties and technology.

    Really good benefits.

    Cons

Very political place to work. There are many people who are more concerned with their careers than the company, which is a shame given the opportunity and how much great talent exists there.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The leadership team already knows it has amazing talent, a great brand, and solid technology. It also knows it needs to create an environment where people are free to do their best work. This is an incredible company - expect great things.

I have been working at Yahoo

    Pros

    * get to work on products used by millions
    * generous pay
    * great group of peers to work alongside
    * good benefits (gym, coffee, free soda)
    * truly inspiring founders (really). jerry and david are really good people

    Cons

    * promote the talkers, not the doers
    * too many useless VPs that got there even though they've been failures in many things they've done
    * epitomizes a culture of not "what you know" but "who you know" -- reminds me a bit like high school...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    * stop doing things halfway. when you commit to something, follow-through on it. don't just move to the new thing
    * when promoting, look at actual work-related accomplishments rather than which person you know or like better
    * hire more doers, less talkers
    * remove 75% (?) of the VPs...but keep those who've actually done (or attempted) something great / innovative
    * stop adding so many layers (didn't we just have a round of layoffs to reduce layers)??
    * get a vision and then go for home runs, not singles
    * remove morale deflating politics and it has the potential to be a really great place to work (again)
