I have been working at Yale New Haven Health System full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Benefits and pay are ok for the New Haven area. But that is not saying much since the only two large employers are the hospital and Yale. Employees in general are nice. Hours are decent. Some good managers, some really bad managers.

    Cons

Extremely hierarchical, at least in IT. Management wears ties, everyone else doesn't. I find this strange. Average age is probably close to 50. Doctors rule the roost. Everyone else that isn't a money generator is second class. Current IT management is overly metrics driven. The company is extremely anti-union, and although I am not in clinical or paid hourly I feel management hostility to workers. Not sure why. There is very low turnover since everyone in management has been there a long time so forget about moving up. IT management attitude is that employees should just be happy they have a job. This is the wrong type of thinking.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop actual career planning into an employees review. Don't look at employees as expenses that need to be cut.

I have been working at Yale New Haven Health System full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Good benefits, good location, if you CYA, it is impossible to get fired.

    Cons

Bureacratic, and political. Make the right friends, and (as another review mentioned) be aware that working 5 hours extra does not even remotely equal being 10 minutes late. Conservative dress. (think IBM). NO accountability of any management to any other management. Everyone including directors are too afraid of politics. Oppressive and not open to ideas. Least proactive approach ever. The same mistakes are made over and over again, because no one will stick their neck out to say that the a failed approach sucks the second and third and fourth time that it is tried...

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Where to start? The entire culture needs to be changed. It cultivates silence and repeated mistakes. Listen! Accept criticism, and consider solutions from wherever they originate.
