I have been working at Yelp

Pros

- Very fun environment to be in, there's always something exciting
- The people are fantastic
- Looks great on a resume
- Connections
- Professional development
- Clear path for advancement
- You're selling THE best local advertising available to local businesses

Cons

- No control over sales territories (i.e. selling Yelp advertising is absolutely not the same in Beverly Hills as it is in Little Rock, Arkansas...yet quotas for both of these kinds territories are the same.)
- A bit of a revolving door, they bring in a new sales team every few months...it kind of creates this sentiment that "you are replaceable"
- As the company grows and goes public, things change...so be prepared to cope. Laptops connected to monitors have been replaced by Mac minis; wireless headsets at Junior AE level are no more; veteran jackets have been discontinued...you start and get so excited for extra perks and work hard towards them and then they are denied right as you get to the level to obtain them.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of or democratize territory distribution and stay consistent with perks. All this aside, keep up the really good work!

I have been working at Yelp

    Pros

Excellent opportunity to work at an up and coming company. If you want to start a career in sales, You'll get the opportunity to learn the ropes in sals, and depending on your success earn a decent commission. To be successful at this company, expect to work hard and put lots of time on the phones. You'll have a front row seat on what makes a fast growing company successful.

    Cons

The average salary is low but you can make up for it with commission. Don't go into this position thinking you'll be able to move to different departments. You must be 100% committed to working in sales.

I have been working at Yelp

    Pros

    Fully Stocked Kitchen
Fully paid benefits through Blue Cross/Blue Shield
    Fun Environment
    Young Staff
    MAC computers
    Transparency
    Great incentives/outings
    Great Training
    Gym membership Reimbursement

    Cons

Pay isn't great, even for living in AZ
Salespeople aren't on a leveled playing field
Promotions and productivity are based on revenue brought in rather than tenure and actual hard work and competence.
The rich stay rich and the poor stay poor- Closers get the best territories but this is all determined by a randomized territory you get in training which will either make or break your career here.
Stressful- you live by numbers everyday and it's never going to be enough

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Remember that you were once an Account Exec, and that closing deals isn't always as easy as the mathematical equations you place on a board that says if I make more calls, I set more appts, which leads to more pitches, and ultimately more deals. This is how we wished things worked every time, but every day and every call is different, so stop hammering hardworking employees about parts of the sales cycle that they cannot fully control.
