Pros

The creative talent, designers, researchers and engineers, are best-in-class. Committed, competent, and motivated with a willingness to work on a diverse portfolio of projects. They are also the most kind and generous individuals to work with day to day.

Cons

There is a major leadership gap. The recent hire and elevation of marketing/sales leads who lack the most basic understanding of design, communication, connection and leadership has driven a large percentage of talented employees at all levels to find opportunities elsewhere. Ziba has suffered a blow with the departure of many of the senior creative leads, in addition to key account and operations leaders over recent months. There is a vacuum of creative leadership to drive and direct projects and the junior level talent that remains. The gap is being filled by outdated, out-of-touch and out-of-control leaders, who neither understand, respect or acknowledge the creative process and team dynamics.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize that intimidation, inconsistency, and lack of vision has played a big part in the company losing it’s way. Acknowledge that the “culture” is not working. The pursuit of those who are a “cultural fit” is resulting in a shift from a company that once excelled to one that is average. You will not be able to replace all the history and talent that has left your beautiful building, but you can rebuild.

Great Design Firm But Less Than Desirable Workplace

    Pros

Great place to learn about brand strategy and design. They take pride in the work they do and have very high expecations for all of their employees. You are expected to be knowledgable and prepared at each meeting in order to gain respect and trust from your group.

    Cons

Too many people (women) crying in the hallways and in the bathroom because they've just been berated by their boss or someone up the food chain. There are several stories about their mistreatment of people. This is what they mean by being able to get along in their "culture". If you can't handle a two by four being thrown in your direction (for no apparent reason), don't waste your time. They also do not give raises. One instrumental person has not received a raise in 6 years. Another has an Ivy league education and did not get a raise in the three years she was there. Don't expect a raise once you are inside.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try being inspiring instead of odd. Show some leadership and drop the "management by fear" angle. When a person makes a mistake, try mentoring them to get better at their job. Try protecting the people who work for you by helping them navigate the odd personalities and weird work environment. Be honest about the job responsibilities - even if they change once the person gets there.

    Pros

At Ziba for over 3 years, I worked with some of the most intelligent, driven, ambitious, passionate people I have ever met or had the pleasure to work with. The creative team is without a doubt one of the best out there. The quality of work and camaraderie has yet to be topped in any discipline I have encountered since. Throughout my time at Ziba I continued to learn every day, challenge and be challenged, and gain exposure to minds, markets, and experiences that have shaped my career since.

Since the change in management, there is a new vitality to Ziba. It is definitely a community - and one that cares about its employees in my experience. I was supported and challenged, mentored and given the opportunity to mentor. Already having a portfolio with some of the most prestigious clients in the world, Ziba is an excellent place to work if you are ambitious, curious, and driven.

I have not found a place I like working more than Ziba.

    Cons

Like any agency, Ziba works to create the best end result possible. That does mean a time commitment which sometimes strays outside of normal business hours. Hours can be long, and stress can mount, but if you are signing up to work for an agency, that is par for the course.

Promotions most commonly come when you prove the case why you should receive one. It is not a place for the timid, or those looking for passive recognition. You definitely have to prove yourself, and put the time in to do so.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to strive for growth, ownership, and a sense of entrepreneurship throughout the company. We learned from earlier managerial systems that micromanaging and competition do not breed the best results. With the current management team in place, however, there is already a change in how the company is structured and run.

Continue to push for innovation not just in the work, but in how Ziba organizes itself.
