Pros

The Engineering organization rules at zinio. it's a very tech-centered culture where innovation is king. i started here last year and had some doubts based on the glassdoor reviews i read. those reviews may have been true at the time, but the environment today is really great. (I hired on at the end of 2011). super smart people, capable leadership, a biz model that's going gangbusters. i can see a bright future here.

Cons

well it's a startup, so there's some degree of ambiguity. roles are getting more defined & the new organizational structure is still taking form. there are some key mgt positions still open, but as a development team member, i get to interview my new perspective bosses, so i'm okay with that.

Advice to Management

don't be afraid to share all the great strides that the company is making. you don't talk about an IPO but i know we're gonna be profitable this year. so let's hear more about that.

    Pros

Great product vision and offerings to the market. High potential to be out there killing the competition. One to watch for the future. Just needs a great one to take this company to where they should be.

    Cons

They stumble around year after year with execution and internal strife. Poor culture and subsequent staff retention which is atrocious . Too much politics at play within senior management preventing focus on key deliveries. CEO is largely abstract and does not drive from the top. Should be a billion dollar company by now in terms of annual sales revenue. Instead, over 10 years on, they blunder on with the same issues and situations.

    Advice to Management

Wish someone would consider the basic recipe for success at Zinio. It is 101 class. I loved the company and still believe the company could be great. You have been replacing or making unhappy your senior management tier for some time now. Get someone on your executive team providing an overall technology vision for the company, void of the politics and power struggles going on. And, I would add for no apparent good reason? Zinio could be great, awesome and bring in profits fitting to a billion dollar company. Wish I could come back and with support, show the company how it could be done. New releases could be going out daily to support customers. But sorry, this company is hell bent on destruction and why I needed to get the hell out of dodge.

    Pros

Its a great space to be in, mobile and tablet is hot these days. Generally a good start-up env here. Snacks and drinks regularly provided, fun vibe. Lately, its been a very positive place to work, with good (and interesting) technology initiatives. Location is great.

    Cons

I'm not going to lie to you. Zinio had some *major* problems the last few years. They had some problems with negative attitudes and a distinct lack of vision with respect to a technology. However, there have recently been some personnel changes in the company...very positive changes. Out with the old, in with the new....I think Zinio has really stepped it up, in terms of culture and willingness to take on *good* and *appropriate* technical challenges.

    Advice to Management

Keep on the track you are on *right now*. Its good an refreshing to see so much liveliness in the company. Build your IP instead of outsourcing it. Continue to empower the engineers, they are the key to creating value at Zinio. Plan and execute on the roadmap instead of focusing meeting publishers deadlines and short term gains.
