Pros

Great location. Fort point is one of the best neighborhoods in Boston to work.
Smart people. The brand and compensation allows them to attract smart people. The problem is keeping them there.
Good compensation. The engineering department has been through a lot of change and I think the management team realizes they need to hire smart experienced people to rebuild.
Great product. Zipcar is cool and you really do have a chance to make it even better.
Good culture. There is still change coming - some people need to leave, others need to step up and take ownership, but at the core is a bunch of young people who want to do good work.

Cons

Old technology. We are working hard to address it but Zipcar is still running on severely outdated tech.
Organizational disfunction. Product and engineering don't feel in sync, period. The engineering department is not well organized. Getting stuff done with ops can be very frustrating.

Advice to Management

A lot of your problems are people problems that at preventing people from doing good work. Seek to further empower individuals and break down barriers to progress at all costs. Hire for a vp of technology and empower them to make aggressive change.

    Pros

    Nice people to work with.

    Cons

There is very little room for growth. There is a disconnect between ABG, Home Office and the field offices. Since the acquisition, new processes have negatively impacted the efficiency of the SOPs, making day to day work challenging and frustrating.

A great place to translate your ideas into action! Lots of fun and great co-workers.

    Pros

The company attracts and hires smart, dedicated people who are passionate about making a difference. Almost everyone is positive, really cares about their co-workers and embraces the collaborative culture. It's a great company with awesome people. The big positives:

Empowerment: If you can think of it, there's a good chance you'll be allowed to do it/try it.
Passion: LOTS of people strongly believe in the brand and it's mission. People come here to love their jobs.
Teamwork: People like and want to help each other.
Brand: People tend to light up when you say you work for Zipcar. It makes everything easier.
Meritocracy: A significant amount of internal promotion has taken place over the last year. Keep moving up the people who can truly make a difference.

    Cons

The car-sharing world has gotten a lot more competitive in the last two years. The company should invest a lot more resources into its technology to create things its members didn't know they wanted until they had it.

With the acquisition by Avis Budget, there has been a natural slowdown in decision-making due to increased bureaucracy, but this is getting better. Keep trusting Zipcar's leaders to do what they know is best and keep it's culture intact. Remember, we're not car rental - that's a commodity business with no differentiation other than price. Lose that 'special sauce' and all that talent will start to bleed away.

    Opportunities:
Technology investment - Google just bought Titan Aerospace to stay 5 years ahead. Think the same way.
Corporate ownership - You don't know everything about car sharing. Trust the people who do know a lot and add your experience in support systems that make peoples' jobs easier.
Localization - every department and market is different. Keep the Borg mentality out of the company.
Engagement - let's keep those members happy, it's why we're here!

    Advice to Management

Lead more like Jeff Bezos from Amazon, Reed Hastings from Netflix or Terry Lundgren from Macy's - listen to your people and think beyond the next quarterly earnings report. It's a great company, let's stay that way!
