Pros

Working at athena provides a rare opportunity to learn, and to contribute to an organization that is growing like mad.
The company is populated with very smart, very energetic people.
The culture in Watertown supports a creative, solutions focused mind-set.
People are generally more than willing to help each other solve problems.
Great statisfaction from being able to contribute to improvements in application and process.
Sr. Leadership tries to communicate and reinforce the corporate mission.

Cons

The Cons of working at athena are for the most part outcrops of the hyper rate of growth. Creating a work - life balance is very challenging. The demands created by managing the pace of growth and change, simply don't allow for a 9 - 5 work schedule. I wouldn't recommend athena for someone who wants or needs an 8 hour work day.

Sr. Leadership has distanced itself too far from the reality of the day-to-day experience and challenges of the majority of staff. They rely too heavily on a cadre of Vice-Presidents to provide them with their understanding and insights. The company is not large enough to justify this hierarchical distance. It has created a significant disconnect between staff's day-to-day experience and Sr. Leadership's understanding of it.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to reconnect directly with Directors, Managers, Supervisors, and staff. Small group informal meetings on a monthly rotation would provide you with a much clearer picture of the challenges folks are encountering.

Not everyone "fits" here and drinks the juice....

    Pros

If you start as an associate and work a lot of long hours or even volunteer for extra projects, you can get promoted.

    Cons

They have a very strange philosophy here about taking care of yourself. There's no tuition reimbursement, because you should do that on your own for your job. The health insurance (ironically) is deplorable, because the feeling is, if you are sick, you should pay more. That's just 2 examples

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do more to take "care" of your employees. Sincerely promote work/life balance

    Pros

Good pay, reasonable work-life balance, good first job for recent grads.

    Cons

Company has a high bar for hiring, but then does not utilize or develop the skills of many employees. Input and knowledge based on previous job experience at other companies is not welcomed. Many employees have never worked anywhere else and are not aware of typical software business processes. Middle management (Directors/VPs) more caught up in political power struggles and appearances rather than focusing on the good of the product.

Poor benefits package considering the company is in healthcare--only middling offerings for health insurance and no real dental or vision. No tuition reimbursement.
