I have been working at eBay Inc.

Pros

The people are the best thing about working at eBay. The second best thing about working at eBay is the community.

Cons

The main downside for working at eBay is the pace of work. There are many times during the year when the volume of work is unrealistic.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need to set the strategy of the company and move forward with it. They should not constantly be changing the strategy and direction of the company every other month, employees lose confidence in the management team.

I have been working at eBay Inc.

    Pros

eBay still looks good on a resume. Just try not to roll your eyes when asked about your experience there at a job interview. There are also small pockets of good people that you will encounter that will help keep you sane. eBay has a really good benefits package, better than anywhere else I have worked.

    Cons

Bad managment. Bad decision making. Nepotism. Cronyism. Soul-extraction by means of a contrived value system. Lack of respect for honest work. Its been years since I came to work smiling. Now I count every moment until I can leave. If you get a job at eBay be prepared to give all you have and expect nothing in return.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I'd tell you to pack it in but you've bred smaller versions of you that are waiting to take your place. Look for your soul, eBay. Too many changes are executed just to make somone's quarterly review look impressive.

    I worked at eBay Inc.

    Pros

Many of the people who work at eBay are the brightest and best in the industry. If you want to network with others who understand how it all works, you might want to consider eBay.

    Cons

eBay no longer seems to respect the people who helped build the company.

There are too many "young turks" with MBAs and an appalling lack of creativity all working from the exact same playbook.

eBay management does not listen to the members or staff.

Disruptive innovation is disruptive and almost never innovative.

True innovation is buried until someone with seniority can claim it as an original idea.

10+ meetings a week is ridiculous.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please just sit down and listen for a moment.

There are people who vested in eBay long before any of you appeared on the scene who know what the roots of the company are and how it grew.

Do not discount the collective advice of literally hundreds of thousands of people who were able to make eBay a success.

Your sellers are often renegades who never fit in the box. Many are independent people who don't like a lot of rules and structured work environments. Part of eBay's attraction for sellers was the ability to define their own work. Your sellers have a wealth of experience ranging from simple, occasional sellers to highly educated and accomplished businessmen, so stop trying to make a one size box to fit all, it will never fly.

Not everyone wants to be a power seller.

    Your buyers are

    1) looking for a bargain : Those looking for a bargain will find it online. Please don't make selling on eBay so expensive and complex that the sellers cannot compete with other online sources. Free shipping is fine, but everyone understands that there is nothing free about it.

    2) looking for a collectible item: Those looking for a collectible know the going price of that item, they are the experts. The truly unique one of a kind items will find their own price point. Those items will always attract interest and business. Don't make eBay a gigantic store with no place for the rare items that energize the community and capture attention, remember our roots.

    3) looking for something they can't find elsewhere: The flea market is an essential part of the eBay experience. Please don't let your perceptions of what is worthwhile color the marketplace.

    4) looking for a simple, safe shopping experience: Please don't try to predict what people are trying to find and how they will use it when they shop on eBay. It would be better to teach people how to search than force them into search patterns based on corporate perceptions.

Do not forget eBay's community values.

Please remember the more rules you make, the more time and money you have to spend on enforcement.
