Current Employee - Database Engineer in San Jose, CA
Current Employee - Database Engineer in San Jose, CA

I have been working at eBay Inc.

Pros

eBay's large scale infrastructure provide enough opportunity for a database engineer to learn and use cutting edge technologies; eBay is very active to adopt new technologies available.

Cons

Total compensation package is not as good as few leading companies. Lack the attraction of the potential IPO of startups

Advice to ManagementAdvice

eBay required there must be some percentage of the workforce to be in the low performance bucket, this is really not a good idea.

Current Employee - Senior Software Engineer in San Jose, CA

I have been working at eBay Inc.

    Pros

*good place to learn about the eCommerce business as well as Technical know how in Java/J2EE technologies.
    * good benefits package
    * mobile teams are set for defining future

    Cons

Highly political environment. to succeed, it is more like who you know than what you did.

The Testing Org needs a major overhaul - Resources are never allocated on time for critical projects (there is never enough budget mysteriously, as the Org keeps getting Top-Heavy!), stressing the entire team! This is not the place for top talent!

Too much stress - avg QA/QE Tester works late nights and weekends to make up for bad decisions made in the mgmt chain, making it hard to recommend this company to top talent.

Promotions to deserving employees are delayed, resulting in avoidable attrition.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - analyze the wave of attrition and do meaningful anonymous exit interviews.

    - Hire more people who actually do the work, especially in Testing (QA) org, instead of more & more middle & top management.

    - spend more money on promoting deserving Individual contributors!

I have been working at eBay Inc.

    Pros

    Good compensation
    Brand name and recognition

    Cons

Management business goals are not consistent and well focused.
Lack of leadership at all levels.
Too many VP's, Directors and middle managers each with their own agenda leads to lack of clear direction. Also a lot of politics which gets in the way of really achieving. Slideware matters more than concrete delivery.
Work life balance sucks. People who work around the clock, give up their lives and neglect their families get rewarded.
Too many reorganizations. Too much turnover.
A lot of focus on outsourcing and developing contractors / consultants.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Have a clear set of business goals and stick to them.
Focus on inspiring and growing your people. They want to achieve for you and make eBay succeed.
