Always looking over your shoulder

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Emulex full-time for more than a year

ProsThe rank and file employees are generally quite knowledgeable and easy to work with, regardless if whether they're in India or the United States. No first hand knowledge about other sites.

ConsIn 2013, the culture turned into where you had to be careful and say and do only what your manager wanted you to do. That was true previously, but it increased to a higher level.

I think this was due to higher level executives who feared for their jobs, and the increasingly sycophantic nature of executives, especially in Engineering.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmbrace these axioms:

1. Truth is good. Lying is bad.
2. Poor treatment of fellow employees is never excusable.

Jeff -- we know that you're a good guy and would never knowingly approve of this behavior. But you need to put extra effort into rooting out and getting rid of executives who condone or exhibit these behaviors -- it's going to destroy the company culture and your reputation if you leave it unchecked.

Good people, working in a tough industry

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Emulex

ProsGood benefits and salary. Open workplace with access to middle management teams and product teams. Product marketing and launch is well executed

ConsIndustry is changing to a point that differentiation and value prop is hard to define. Products are slipping, and focus can be misplaced. Key people have been let go in the last year, more reductions in force are probably forthcoming.

Advice to Senior ManagementFocus on your core competencies instead of pipe dreams. Level with your bigger accounts on product delays.

Not growth oriented

Principal Engineer (Current Employee)
San Jose, CA

I have been working at Emulex full-time for more than 8 years

ProsEmulex has a open working environment. People respect each others opinion. No office politics as some other bigger companies.
Work involves cutting edge technologies with modern methedologies
Respect for people

ConsNo opportunity of career growth
The architecture and product platform is ever changing. For every projet it is like developing everything from scratch.
A lot of project cancellation at the final stage

Advice to Senior ManagementSerious lack of visibility. The company is confused about product road-map amd product positioning.

Questionable Work Ethics

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Emulex full-time for more than a year

ProsSalary, hard to match in OC/ LA non-startup company

ConsNo growth opportunity
Good for a job, not a career
High degree of secrecy, hush-hush cover-up culture
Favoritism
No respect for dissenting voice - Manager's way or the highway
Insiders broadcast confidential news for cheap gossip
Sinking ship
Lack process, vision, budget, resources
Treatment post resignation is humiliating and disrespectful

Advice to Senior ManagementSeems too late to fix the ship
Sad to see a great place slide downhill
Management is playing to Wall Street Galleries.

I have been working at Emulex as an intern for less than a year

ProsState of the art technology

No vision or product to save present or future

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Costa Mesa, CA

I worked at Emulex full-time for more than 5 years

ProsGood colleagues and southern California location

ConsTo much executives and management staff, lost vision. Constant layoff of best talent and waste of company money on useless projects and products. Lack of processes, courage and support to implement best of industry and lessons from mistakes.

Advice to Senior ManagementLook at your competitors to diversify and cut huge expenses on old and favorite staff. Acquisitions from cash on hand and repeated layoffs are not a way to grow the company or product line.

Depending on your location, the engineering teams contains the brightest and hardest-working engineers I've encountered.

Principal Engineer (Current Employee)

I have been working at Emulex full-time for more than 8 years

ProsGood work-family balance, vacation and ESSP .

ConsEmployees do not feel appreciated. Upper management appears to hide information and lacks transparency....they seem to care only about how they will prosper in the company versus doing what is best for the company and it's employees.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart allowing employees to actually feel like they are contributing to the bottom line. Reinstate profit-sharing, 401k matching and distribute RSUs more generously to those that really make the company successful (and I'm not talking about those with 2-3 letter titles). Employees get frustrated seeing upper management share in all the success of their hard work with employees have nothing to show for it besides a pat on the back and a "Atta Boy!". How do you guys really expect employees to work hard for you? By threatening layoffs...I think not!
