I worked at Enterprise Rent-A-Car full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Enterprise is, and is repeatedly recognized as, a great company to start your career. Assuming you have a top notch management team, you will learn the basic sales process and fundamentals of running a business. There is no such thing as "tenure", so promotions are merit based and they promote from within. If you have great numbers, are mobile and willing to relocate, you can advance quickly. There are several departments and career paths to take after you succeed in the rental branches. You earn Paid-Time-Off, but need to request it at least two weeks in advance. If staffing is an issue, your request will likely be denied. The medical benefits are great, with lots of options.

    Cons

Everyone is expected to work long hours. With most employees starting directly out of college, it can be a difficult transition to work between 49-55hrs per week, usually at least 6 days. Other than small prizes for contests, the pay for Management Trainees is low, even though they are expected to generate revenue with strong sales performance. Another downside is that several locations require the employees to clean the cars themselves. Washing and vacuuming cars while wearing a suit in high temperatures can be a burden. Since Managers are paid based on the bottom line, they look to cut costs ANYWHERE they can, and this includes their car wash expense. A common complaint among employees is the terrible work-life balance, between the long hours and low pay. Meetings are held after hours, and can sometimes be followed by a mandatory happy-hour, which adds length to an already long day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider consolidating the staff in each Area or District. Some locations are busier than others on different days and can benefit by being appropriately staffed. Rather than increase the hourly pay across the board for all MTs as low pay is a constant complaint, incentivize them for their sales. Pay a % for the additional revenue generated. Not only will this increase sales, but it will increase competition for customers whereas now, employees tend to avoid customers when they come into the office.

The people for the most part are hard working and team players. Everyone wants to be in the number 1 spot. Tons of competition. Great benefits and good 401k

    Cons

Long hours, expect you to relocate for promotions. Very hard work life balance. Expected 11 hour days.

    Pros

The pay is ok but not great for the hours worked!

    Cons

Management schemes together to promote favorites. No work life balance. Exile you once you look for other opportunities outside of rental & don't agree with the unethical things they want you to do to succeed. They move you around to different branches to fill spots.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

change hours. Make better opportunities for your employees to excel.

    Pros

The business management program gave me experience with all facets of the accounting process from fiduciary responsibilities to cost containment to employee development.

    Cons

Poor pay, long work hours (that often go unrecognized), lack of growth. The company values mobility more than anything else. Your ability to relocate takes precedence over your job knowledge, past reviews, integrity, and work ethic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Live up to the founding values.

    Pros

Lots of overtime? the people are generally young and cool to hang out with. You can learn how to talk to ANYBODY and run a business in the right direction.

    Cons

a whole lot of hours 55+. You will work weekends too. Management can get too caught up in the bigger picture and ignore everything else or just keep the bare minimum standards of happiness. Unnecessary gossip.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

stop breaking promises and just be frank. You might find people better than ever expected.

Great "2nd tier" corporate job for recent college grads

I worked at Enterprise Rent-A-Car full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

The absolute best thing about working for Enterprise as a recent college grad is that you get to work with a lot of other young people who are just like you. Fraternity men and sorority women and D1/3 athletes from big schools are very common at Enterprise. The atmosphere of the office is always fun, always relaxed, and it is not uncommon to hang out with assistant managers and other management trainees outside of work. Competition is fierce, but rarely unfriendly as everyone looks to help each other and get ahead at the same time.

One of the cool things is that management transfers people from branch to branch often enough that you get to meet lots of people in your geographic and this will serve you well when you become an assistant and branch manager and need others to do you favors. Another thing comes right from Enterprise's slogan "We'll pick you up." Management Trainees often pick people up and drop people off at bodyshops, service stations, offices, dealerships, and residences. You get to meet and talk with all sorts of people and if you can learn all about what they do and how they broke into their field.... You know in case you want to switch jobs after a year or two.... wink, wink!

Enterprise is a fairly easy company to get a job with (you need a college degree, a suit, and common sense) and they do not pay well at all to start, but not everyone needs to stay in the Branch Sales/Management track of the company and there are several opportunities to move into other facets of the company like fleet management, car sales, risk management, exotic rental, and much much more.

    Cons

Compensation is not good to start. Obtaining promotions requires a lot of time, sweat and tears, patience, and a large, large gulp of their sweet green koolaid.

Also a big aspect of the Management Trainee position is that you have to pick people up and drop people off from their houses, body shops, etc. If you think that picking people up and sometimes feeling like an Uber driver would be uncomfortable or beneath you, then this job is not for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote the all-stars faster before they move on to medical sales where they make tons of money.

    Pros

They take on all newbies with zero to little Corporate work experience. You learn some high pressure sales tactics for B2C.

    Cons

Working in a full suit in an airport during the summer is not practical. They pay you around $12 to be in the management trainee program. There is zero work life balance. Expect to work 60 hours a week and every other weekend. Best to stick it out for a year then move on.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They should offer commission as part of your job performance.
