I worked at Entropic Communications as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

I only contracted here for a few weeks, but really liked the company culture. People were friendly, willing to help. They brought in both lunch and dinner for us during the tape-out phase.

    Cons

There was a lot of pressure due to the fact that the tape-out date was close.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I had no working relationship with upper management so I really have no comments.

I worked at Entropic Communications full-time

    Pros

Generally good company benefits and compensation. Good if you like to work with hard and energetic workers; generally easy to get along with others. Company is willing to invest in tools that make sense for individuals and teams. Marketing/business is transparent with overall company strategy/direction.

    Cons

Hiring is focus on specialized engineering talent rather than those who are technical leaders. This tends to be bad for team camaraderie. Teams/groups tend to work as vertical silos rather than together; sometimes there is an effort to coerce cross team function rather than natural cohesion. Perhaps this is due to the lack of clear business objectives to engineering tasks. This is not due to faulty communication rather than a lack of leadership/management that can effectively translate objectives.

I have been working at Entropic Communications full-time

    Pros

You work on leading edge technology and the work is very challenging. The products also have an impact on millions of people so it gives you a sense of accomplishment.

    Cons

Lots of politics, not very rewarding unless you are working in the hardware group. Yes, it is a chip company, but other groups including SW also play a critical role in the success of the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Acknowledge that all functional areas play a critical role in the success of the company.

I have been working at Entropic Communications full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Free soda if you call that a pro to working someplace.
I have worked at Entropic in San Diego for years It used to have many pros, but lately it's hard to find very many. With the purchase of the Trident SOC business, the work environment is on a rapid downhill trajectory to make Entropic like any other crappy semiconductor company. Any competent engineer could find a much better place to work.

    Cons

Fired about 5% of the people on November 28, 2012 even though the company is financially strong and has openings that the CEO euphemistically called "...resource reallocations throughout the Company". It seems like the goal is to put fear into the remaining employees that they could be fired at anytime if they don't play the political game correctly. The end result will be everybody looking out for themselves and making sure somebody looks worse than them when the next firing comes. The management seems to be rapidly changing to the old school fear based model of management. Meanness seems to be the latest fad in the Entropic executive suite.
    Other cons:
Office space is cramped and noisy making it hard to get work done.
Complete lack of transparency and honesty in management and decision making.
SOC business purchased from Trident is in much worse shape that management is telling investors with serious quality problems in the product line.
You won't find any enlightened management practices here.
Don't expect to get training in a new position if your position is no longer needed. Expect to get fired instead.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more honest with employees. Take their input more seriously and conduct a meaningful survey of employees attitudes about working at Entropic.
Read some books on building an enlightened and civilized place to to work.
Provide quiet offices for employees so they can be productive and get their work done.
