I have been working at Equinox Fitness full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

    Plenty of in-house educational opportunities
    Beautiful, clean facilities
Very friendly staff- I love my coworkers
Good benefits package for those who stay at full-time (42 training sessions per 2-week pay period)

    Cons

I agree with the reviewer who called it "a cold, soul-less corporation"
Both the trainers' office and break room are cramped, poorly-maintained spaces
Demeaning advertising campaign that objectifies bodies, rather than celebrating and encouraging health from within, and fitness as a lifestyle
Too much emphasis on trainers "hitting their numbers" (ie, crank out as many training sessions as you can), and these performance numbers are emailed out to all the other trainers to foster competition (ugh!)
For many trainers, their own health and fitness falls by the wayside as they struggle to keep up their session load, attend meetings, etc.
Trainer burnout and mediocre earnings = high turnover
The majority don't make even close to $100,000. Half that number is closer to reality.
These clubs are built in expensive areas, and trainers need to live nearby if they want quality of life. It is challenging to pay local rents, let alone be able to afford to buy a house here.
Getting new clients will rely, in good part, on your hitting up the Membership Advisers on a regular basis.
More and more new trainers being added on a regular basis, so getting new clients and staying at full-time status becomes even more of a challenge for many

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trainers need to be treated like the gold they are to these clubs. Consider ways to create more work-life balance, assist in helping your staff find affordable local housing, give trainers clean, modern areas with enough space in which to do office work and rest, eat, etc. Value the trainers' time- use in-person meeting sparingly. Be honest about earnings expectations. New client leads should be facilitated through the personal training department manager and should not depend on how chummy the trainer gets with the MA's. Keep the process fair.

I worked at Equinox Fitness full-time for more than a year

    Pros

membership kinda. Many staff members were great people.

    Cons

vulgar managers, abusive workplace. Managers sleeping with managers and staff. Regional manages sleeping with club level managers. Vulgar language in the workplace constantly. It was an awful work experience. I have worked for a few different fitness companies and I was left shocked by the horrible unprofessional behavior., bully tactics, and frankly awful human beings.

There are many reviews that say "great place to work!" and so on, AVOID EQUINOX. You have been warned! those positive reviews are made by the company to try and make a positive spin on a horrible place. There are MANY better places to work in the NYC area.

DO NOT waste your time, effort, and energy with this place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When a senior manager sleeps with someone, fire them. Dont sweep it under the rug, just fire them. Show your regional managers that they can get in trouble just like anyone else for unprofessional behavior. Club managers shouldn't be allowed to sleep with department managers and keep their jobs. Regional managers shouldnt be able to be nasty and vulgar and keep their jobs. You expect a lot from your employees but give your senior managers a license to kill without any consequence. The abusive workplace environment must stop.

I worked at Equinox Fitness full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Clean gym, nice equipment, nice group classes

    Cons

For anybody who is considering taking this job, just be aware that you are only good as your last month. You have 3 months to prove yourself, if you don't hit their goals, you are out the door. Management will talk about you behind your back and treat you like crap if you are new and not producing. Not much of a team enviornment, everyone is out for themselves. Some very narcissistic members and co-workers

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat people like people and not like numbers. You might get better results.

I have been working at Equinox Fitness full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    Bartering within the club
    Free membership
    Flexible hours
    No micro managing

    Cons

They expect so much from you when they pay you literally minimum wage
They dont care about the spa at all. The only time they so care is when they ask you for the numbers
    Expected to work all holidays

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We understand that members go to Equinox to work out and not for the spa but as licensed massage therapists and estheticians this is our career. Management should really take care of all departments because everyone in the spa gets discouraged and feel unappreciated. You should really learn how to value your employees and not just think about hitting quota.

    I worked at Equinox Fitness

    Pros

Free gym memberships but black out times.

    Cons

Does not care about employees. Management rules through fear of your job. The turnover ratio at corporate is like 40% and 80% in the clubs especially sales and pt. For corporate only directors get a bonus and difficult to get promoted unless your fluffing the right vp or higher.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your employees are the face of the company and the only differential between you and the competition is our customer service. You can learn something from Danny Meyer and soulcycle.

    Flavor of the month...

    I worked at Equinox Fitness

    Pros

Education, great workshops for group fitness instructors.

    Cons

Favoritism: once you are no longer the "hot item" they are very quick to push you out of the schedule.
Our particular fitness manager is a very "yes sir" kind who won't stand up for you even if you are a great instructor/ trainer
    Salary is low
Schedules get changed every month pretty much so it is hard to keep 5 classes a week to maintain benefits. .." Your numbers were not great this month"... Attendance is cyclic in the suburbs.
Members get told one thing to justify kicking an instructor out if the schedule while the reality is way far from that version... "He/She is no longer available", and then members see you coming to work out at that same hour

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go case by case and give instructors a chance
Numbers do not replace professionalism and education
New and "hotter" instructors are not always better... Of course you may get them for cheap when they just start out
Pay special attention to moms' schedules in the suburbs.. Numbers can't be the only element for judging an instructors performance.

I worked at Equinox Fitness full-time

    Pros

Work in a beautiful gym with your own office. Beautiful people everywhere.

    Cons

A lot of politics involved in the sales division. You will learn what making over 100 phone calls per day feels like.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you have to do to find the right people for your team. It takes a special sales person to make it in this business.
