I have been working at Ercot full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Great people, decent salary and awesome benefits. It's close to major metropolitan areas without having to deal with insane traffic daily. Coworkers are fun and most end up being good friends. There are lots of opportunities to learn. You get the feeling that the company cares about you.

    Cons

Upward mobility may not be as as easy as some want. I have heard that other positions can be too political and stressful.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Most managers are great, while some put too much pressure on their employees.

I have been working at Ercot full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Friendly employees, good salaries if you are able to convince management, relaxed work schedule

    Cons

Management need to identify the talent and nurture them. It is easy to become lazy in work, too many departments to do little work.

I worked at Ercot as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Good pay for intern, friendly and smart people and great working atmosphere, wonderful place for actually learning the power system

    Cons

Stop hiring people without green card or citizenship for full-time. However, it's just the company policy, I still recommend international students try to do an internship there since the valuable experience and the good reputation of ERCOT would still easily get you a job in other companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

For internship experience, I think it's better to be more interactive with various departments. Some interns only know the work in their own department. Some supervisors would also help the interns to know more about other departments and the whole procedure. From my side, I didn't see any political issues, all people are willing to take their time and help, if though I didn't work for them.

    Pros

good name for the resume. Thats all.

    Cons

very little incentive and opportunity to move up, manager wants you be a SME. Zero emphasis on personal development. Slow learning. People back bite. There is nothing in Taylor, TX.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be a manager, not just someone who wants their work done.

I have been working at Ercot full-time

    Pros

ERCOT offers a great work / life balance, good career opportunities, and an excellent working environment. The company promotes good health and encourages employees to get involved. There's multiple organizations to get involved in and ways to give back to the community. ERCOT works hard and believes that having some fun is also very important. It's also a VERY stable company!

    Cons

Some may think that ERCOT's salary isn't competitive. When you look at the benefits ERCOT provides and the cost of those benefits, you'll see that compensation overall is very competitive! ERCOT is key to managing the grid for a vast majority of Texas. Because of the nature of the business, it can be political; for good reason though.

I have been working at Ercot as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

-not a lot of work to do, work is very easy (don't know why I got hired and getting paid)
-laid back environment, no one bothers you. everyone minds their own business
-it's a small company, seems like people do get promoted
-managers/coworkers "disappear" for hours, long breaks
-flexible schedules (leave early, stay late, make hours etc.), people work from home (but after some times)

    Cons

-the Air Conditioner is always blasting high (it's freezing)
-far from Round Rock (but no traffic to go or come)

    since it's a non-profit company:
-not much to learn, sit idle
-work you do will most likely not help you outside the company (common software such as Oracle not used, Linux and Windows are)
-company is very slow on getting things done such as bringing in a new software, takes months if not years to implement something

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

havent' really come across management. just give people more work to do.

    Pros

You get access to all the data and can learn how the ins and outs of the market work

    Cons

Glass ceiling and the promotions will not be given unless you meet the description to a T, even if you are currently doing that job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you ask the workers to do a job, pay them for doing that job and make that job their title.
