I worked at Essentia Health full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I had a great boss, great tools and the opportunity to grow in my skills and experience. Overall, a great company to work for.

    Cons

As with any company that an individual could work for, there are always opportunities for improvement in the organization in which one is employed. I think EH had some of the same challenges and opportunities that other Healthcare providers had.

I have been working at Essentia Health as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Everyone is working towards the common goal of patient care. Everyone is responsible an educated. I felt like it was a low stress job.

    Cons

Some people are very lazy workers in information technology and do not do their share. I am only an intern and do more than other workers.

I worked at Essentia Health full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

This company does have decent benefits and for the position that I worked in I was a member of the union which meant I got yearly pay raises. There was room for advancement to a certain extent and each time I transferred I was offered more money.

    Cons

Like any company there are cliques. The con of working for a union, or one of them, is that everything goes by seniority so if someone worked there longer they would get first choice for transfers and time off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take into consideration who is doing the work, not who your favorite is.

I worked at Essentia Health full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Co-workers for the most part are good people

    Cons

IT management is horribly unqualified, most that I dealt with didn't have any management experience prior to this job.
End up working 50/60 hours a week, and they will ask for more

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire managers/directors/CIOs that have degrees in management or information systems management.

I have been working at Essentia Health

    Pros

Constant supply of highly profitable gullible sick people which in turn makes for a consistent workload.

    Cons

Good old boys club full of engrained long term local people who put shallow politics at a higher priority than the work environment

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The human resources department needs to grow a pair and act on the continuing problems instead of sweeping them under the rug

    I worked at Essentia Health

    Pros

Many career opportunities and room to advance. Friendly, cooperative team astmosphere. Relaxed and enjoyable environment.

    Cons

As an inter, I had a lot of down time. Had to hunt for projects to fill time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep the relaxed, flexible environment. Find a way to give the interns more responsibility.

State of the art equipment due to Miller Dwan Foundation grants.

    Cons

Cut throat business style. Expanding into every small medical clinic in the region.

I worked at Essentia Health full-time

    Pros

Relaxed atmosphere, freedom to explore new ideas without pressure from management to adhere to their personal preference of software. I got to touch a lot of different systems.

    Cons

The shift work was terribly irregular. Lots of the time I ended up working all 3 shifts in one week and could never, ever get on a good sleep schedule. I didn't have much of an opportunity to move up in the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Quit rotating contractors and hire permanent staff. It's better for business to keep people already familiar with the company's systems.

I worked at Essentia Health full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Mission based founded on Benedictine values. Great views and some facilities are beautiful. Quality patient care. Opportunities for training and learning.

    Cons

Scrambling to prepare for health care reform, managers have too much to do. Workforce has sense of entitlement and the many unions intimidate managers and can make managing employees a challenge. Moving away from Benedictine roots.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

settle down, set example for employees.
