I worked at Essex County College full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

4-5 weeks vacation time each year.

    Cons

Why would anyone want to work at a place whose motto was “We have to do more with less.”

If you like clean working conditions, avoid this college, since often there were mice running around the offices.

Don’t bother asking for a salary increase if they say you’re doing a good job; apparently you’re supposed to be happy just with their praise.

A common mantra was “Don’t let the students do anything to embarrass us.”

For some reason they were always involved in lawsuits with businesses and students. What a waste of taxpayer money.

If you like being treated badly by incompetent administrators, then apply for a job at Essex. Low salary, no parking, cheapskate administrators, lousy managers, snobby professors. I feel bad for the students. It's hard to believe this place has remained open for so long. I would not recommened working here, even if you are unemployed; even if you are young and want experience. Keep looking, and find another place to work, if you are interested in a career in student affairs or higher education administration.

Upper level administrators talk behind employees' backs; if you have something to say to me, say it to my face. Especially if you're a man; be a man and say it to my face, instead of being a wuss and talking behind my back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go away and let some young talented people take over. Pay fair salaries to your workers. Have realistic expectations about what can and cannot be done.

I worked at Essex County College full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

For the most part, no one will ever bother you. Unfortunately, this is because no one cares about the work that you do.

    Cons

Pay. It's a poor joke. If one were able to teach ten, three-credit classes a year then one would earn a total of 20,580. I worked there so long that still sounds like a lot of money. Often times your schedule is changed at the last moment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop paying your adjunct what they should have earned in the 1970's.

    Pros

Good learning experience, deal with a range of different personalities therefore helping you learn how to cope with all types of people. Fast pased work environment.

    Cons

Unorganized management, structural problems causing people to be fired. Most employees are part timers causing a larger work load for small time-frame, low salary.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix your structural issues, help employees who deserve it.

Just another adjunct gig. Humanities faculty is very cordial; most of them care. Didn't care much for upper management.

I worked at Essex County College as a contractor (more than 5 years)

    Pros

You will have a few serious students; they make it worth your while.
You have some degree of independence in what you wish to cover.
That there is a union is great--compared to what was there before, none.

    Cons

You will get a few students who God put there just to test your will.
You need to take the Student Learning Objectives seriously, which is a good thing--unless you have a very independent streak.
Better that there is a union, but being an adjunct is no career, and the union will likely never fix the underlying problem, which is reliance on a bloated adjunct work force--so most of the time, overworked high school teachers will end up teaching additional classes in the evening to get an additional paycheck.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I hope you figure out the best way to harness the MOOCs before it's too late. I've seen many devoted people work diligently to keep the retention rate as high as feasible. You have leverage in the MOOCs if you get your act together--I'm only glad that I don't have to rely on low adjunct pay to help make the puzzle work for you. This is your moment to transform the college. Good luck!
