Pros
Generally a great place to work. Employees are treated fairly. It's a complicated industry, and every agency that I have worked at has typical agency problems, but 4D did a good job of breaking down some of the barriers. The 4D approach was unique in that it combined numerous marketing disciplines under a unified umbrella and brought the services to market as a joint effort. Solid cross functional teams supporting the ever changing needs of the clients.
Cons
It's a typical agency with typical agency problems. Politics, croneyism, little job security due to the ebb and flow of the marketplace. Probably because of their scale, 4D wasn't effected as much by market shifts, but the fear was always there.
Advice to Senior Management
Always remember the little people that work for you.
Pros
The people make this place and the creative that comes out of the shop
Cons
Over worked and under appreciated. Management barely interacts with the people doing the work and we are the ones that own the client relationship and have so much control.
Advice to Senior Management
Take time to recognize the work being done and the people doing it vs focusing only on the numbers. With out the people doing the work we won't have the revenue.
Pros
easy commute, different types of projects to work on, work closely with designers. smaller than the rest of Euro since it focuses only on pharma clients
Cons
not everyone understand interactive, producers make promises they can't backup and don't consult IA or Design before committing to deadlines for work. they don't have a documented UX process so causes lots of confusion about expectations
Advice to Senior Management
Most of the team needs to be educated about what UX is and isn't responsible for. Producers need to understand what it actually involved in executing work. Freelancers should be treated with more respect. Just because they aren't full-time doesn't mean they should be given less of an ability to contribute. They were hired for a reason. Use their expertise to the fullest.
Less politics and that sort of non-sense would help greatly
Pros
Your coworkers are for the most part. Everyone’s drive and dedication to get the goal met. The ability to break away from the day to day grind and let loose with out of the box thinking. The friendships that are made and the family like atmosphere that embraces you when you enter the door. Your peers who have been through certain situations that are willing to give advice rather than let you stumble.
Cons
Well to sum it up in one word would be Management. I know that some might think it is easy to point the finger at them but they are ones who take on that burden when they accept the job. Lets start at the bottom and work our way up. Who is responsible for the task at hand? So many offices involved it becomes a power struggle for the work. Who is passing misinformation to clients with out consulting the workers who can give you the straight answer?
Advice to Senior Management
Take some time to listen to your workers and not just the managers of the offices. I am talking about the little people. A little praise goes along way and let me tell you, if you would just do things like that, your employees would bend over backwards without a complaint. Happiness can become contagious and then watch your productivity rise.
