    Pros

Evolent is made up of amazing people, and the leadership is putting a lot of energy into fostering company culture to sustain and environment that employees will want to stay in for a long time. Not only do employees earn 25 days of PTO, but we're encouraged to take them -- many employees take two-week-long vacations. The company is committed to developing its employees, so if you are offered a more junior job but believe in Evolent's mission, there are opportunities to grow and move within the company once you are an Evolenteer.

    Cons

As a "start-up" with over 600 employees, processes and procedures aren't the smoothest which can lead to a lot of headaches. These will be worked out over time, but don't join if you're not up for the challenge of building something new and working out the kinks!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make sure you're providing the necessary training and support for junior employees as they move into more client-facing or management roles. Continue to keep open lines of communications with employees!

    Pros

    The people are incredibly friendly
Open door policy (basically no offices) makes learning and interacting with people from middle to top management very easy
    Extremely talented employees
    Very laid back feel

    Cons

Some people may find the environment a little too laid back
Some people may not find the lack of a traditional company structure appealing
A few internal problems involving how data is tracked, but easily fixable if attended to

    Pros

It's a great place to learn when you are just out of school. You may have opportunity to take a lot of responsibilities from early on.

    Cons

Work-life balance is terrible. Many people work 80 hours a week, which creates a toxic environment in a workplace.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Long hours should be not encouraged or rewarded. Work with your staff to improve productivity. Stop being a workaholic. Learn to have a life.

Exciting and challenging work in a mission-driven culture

    Pros

I've never worked in at a company where I truly am energized and excited to come to work every day. The mission of the company is really fulfilling and you're surrounded by incredibly smart people. Everyone here is collaborative and there is no competition - everyone is committed to achieving a common goal and people are appropriately recognized for the great work they do. It's really an amazing thing - the culture that's been created (and kept intact as we rapidly grow) is really special and makes working here so much fun. Even though there's ~600 employees now, it still has a start-up vibe so there's plenty of opportunity to grow and be challenged. Management really trusts and empowers the staff to make decisions and cares about the results of your work, not how many hours you put in every day. They truly embrace a flexible work schedule and really respect people's personal lives.

    Cons

The start-up environment does have it challenges as there isn't always a set way of doing things, so there's often a fair amount of figuring it out along the way. Depending on your personality, this can be a good or bad thing. Some people are not totally comfortable with the flat structure (ie, no org chart), but it's also a great opportunity to work with people at all different levels to learn from different perspectives.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep doing what you're doing. You've created an amazing company with an incredible mission and fantastic people. The transparency and accessibility of the executive team is very refreshing and it's great to still have a start-up environment within the structure that naturally evolves as the company continues to grow.

    Pros

Amazing talent at all levels of the organization - with the smarts, spirit and humility to tackle the most pressing issues facing our industry. Highly collaborative, supportive team dynamic. Open, accessible executive leadership. An environment where you'll never get bored or suffer from lack of growth opportunities. Progressive policies when it comes to work life balance, wellness, working remotely, etc.

    Cons

Like any organization growing at an astronomical pace, Evolent has its challenges. If you're not a self starter, this is not the place for you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep cultivating/preserving the culture and ensure communication flows freely up/down/laterally.

    Pros

People who choose to work at Evolent do so because they want to make a big difference in health care. Our passion drives us to work hard but also to invest deeply in each other. As a rule, the company does a great job taking our work seriously but not ourselves, and their is a strong culture of having fun in addition to working hard. Truly one of the best places I have ever worked.

    Cons

Because we are running after big challenges, it is hard to feel like you're ever "done" - still so much more to accomplish.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep investing in culture - it is what makes this place special.

Plenty of perks but needs some work

    Pros

The Arlington, VA office is state-of-the-art modern with all kinds of perks like treadmill desks, a gym, fully-stocked staff kitchen with snacks and soda, and open floor plan. The general attitude is "do what you want as long as you get your work done" so there is a lot of flexibility on hours and working from home. You get 25 days of paid time off to use however you want plus 10 federal holidays. It's a pretty young, vibrant office with a lot of recent graduates and a lot of big ideas. The company seems to be in a good position for growth within the health care industry so I would expect things can only get better.

    Cons

A lot of positions are not well defined and there seems to be some duplication of roles. There are way too many management positions and not enough people "on the ground." Management styles are hit or miss and in 6 months I've had three different managers. Some really micro-manage and others are totally hands off. Training is not consistent across departments and offices. Procedures seem to change every day and sometimes it feels like everyone is struggling to make sense of what they're supposed to be doing because there is not a lot of direction from management and there are a lot of communication issues. I have a hard time explaining what I do and what the company does to other people. There has never been a consistent message regarding the vision and operation of the company and as a relatively new hire I would have expected some sort of company-wide "elevator pitch" in training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There are too many manager positions and not enough employees doing the "grunt" work for them to manage. Improve communication and listen to the people on the ground before making decisions that affect procedures. As far as benefits, it would be great if the company offered tuition reimbursement or promoted continued education.

    Pros

Evolent offers a face paced open communication environment that is unique to the healthcare industry. The career growth feels limitless and the benefits are market leading. I joined the company in early stages as employee number 32 and have enjoyed working with the top talent the company continues to attract.

    Cons

I would not recommend it for people who are not open to change and enjoy having structured days.

    Pros

Great benefits and office culture. Don't feel that I need to "push through" a cold or if I am feeling poorly. Working from home is an option and casual dress is encouraged.

    Cons

The location caters to the DC and NOVA job pool. It isn't super easy getting here for 9am and 5pm if you don't live near the metro, however, the work day is flexible and the parking garage is only $110 a month! If you like a clear cut definition of how anything works, you will struggle with getting anything done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't discourage applicants that are overqualified for entry to mid level positions. The beauty of starting new is that there is always a new project or venture to move into. By having highly qualified employees they can be molded to fit into future projects and programs down the road.
