I worked at Exar full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Convenient east bay location and ample parking.

    Cons

As a former 15-year employee, Exar has been circling the drain for at least two years.VP-level staff over compensated; all are awaiting acquisition. Current CEO (scorched earth management style) started at $500k in 2012, now another $100k in 2014. Annual revenues the same; stock price essentially the same. What are shareholders getting?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take company private, sell off acquisitions and technologies, retire management.

I have been working at Exar full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Have a great team to work with. Flexible work at home policy. All of the team I work with impress me with their professionalism and general product and customer knowledge. Have had numerous opportunities to lean new skills in my profession.

    Cons

Have found that annual reviews have been sporadic and sometimes did not occur in certain years. Would like to get documented feedback on how I am doing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Vacation policy requiring taking time off in specific quarters is a bit annoying. Some like to accumulate and take longer duration vacations. The typical 2 week vacation at initial hire.

I have been working at Exar full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Some interesting products, that can be competitive
    Some good dedicated people
New products are starting to come out that should help in the future. Many trying to improve some of these aspects but little support from management.

    Cons

    Very few Sales people left.
    No Marketing people left
    No Brand in the Market
4 unpaid days off every qtr.
Lots of new people from acquisitions, some culture clashes going on.
Many good employees are still being laid off or leaving.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Sell quickly, business is being starved.

I have been working at Exar

    Pros

Exar has a nice soccer field and tennis court on site. Located conveniently at the center of the east bay.

    Cons

Marketing is not doing well in defining the product directions and specifications on existing products. With the lack of organization, marketing people seem out of place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Exar has been transformed ever since the new CEO is in place, whether or not if this is lead to a positive change, the current CEO has done a tremendous achievement in terms of the stock price.

    I worked at Exar

    Pros

Financially secure company with a long history ( 40 years). A lot of employees have been with the company 10+ or 20+ years. A good work environment, friendly people, expectations are reasonable and coworkers are helpful. Compensation and benefits are both reasonable-- not outstanding, but fair. By Silicon Valley standards, a stable company where you know what you're going to get.

    Cons

Exar struck me as overly resistant to change, which isn't a big surprise given how long it has been around. I also felt that Exar lacked an identity in a way that no other place I've worked has. What makes Exar Exar? I guess the fact that it's been around for 40 years-- every other place I've worked has something more tangible: advantages in customer service, engineering or pricing, etc. But for Exar I could never put my finger on it-- except to say that it's been around 40 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Figure out what Exar does well and stick with it.

I have been working at Exar

    Pros

In general, Exar has competent employees who are nice people. There are lots of people with 10 or more years at the company who manage to keep the company going.

    Cons

Exar has a broad focus for such a relatively small company (about 500 employees). It is easy for the smaller projects to get lost among the handful of larger projects.
