State government work has retirement advantages but the job may not be as rewarding as in the private sector.

    Intern (Current Employee) Harrisburg, PA

ProsThey are very flexible with hours, the 7.5 hour work day is also nice. If you are a career employee you cannot beat the retirement - pension and healthcare. You really can find many competant employees that are experts in their field.

ConsIt is a stereotypical bureaucracy. Much of the work is repetitive. Duplication is common. You do not feel as though you are working towards a goal such as a profit margin or net income amount. A lot of the work seems like maintenance of the giant organization.

Advice to Senior ManagementDo away with the pension benefits and pay competitive salaries to employees. Senior management positions pay 3-4 times as much in the private sector. Make state wages similar and get rid of SERS.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen more to the employees and less to the politics.
