I have been working at Exelis full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Decent Pay, decent benefits, some flexibility, haven't seen engineering staff layoffs in years.

    Cons

Lots of incompetent non-technical management. A good chunk of incompetent/lazy engineers. The company was restructured as a "matrix" organization roughly 9 months ago. This has been the worst thing I have ever seen. Instead of one or two "bosses" you now have 10 and none of them have the slightest idea of what you do or specialize in. How can you possibly run a company efficiently if the people in charge have the technical IQ of tree frogs, and the engineering staff is incorrectly labeled and titled? You can't.

    Advice to Management

Abandon this "matrix" organization, and put some technically capable people in charge. Or at the very least give your engineering staff and technicians more specific/accurate titles. We aren't vending machine items but if you want to treat us that way at least label us correctly.

I have been working at Exelis full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company was continually seeking to bid on contracts trying to expand business. Had a resource issue ensuring they had enough personnel to do the work. Ability to complete projects in a quick and efficient manner.

    Cons

Was just bought out by Harris. The contract is up for recompete. Some employees feel disenfranchised by mundane and repetitive work. Very little recognition by senior management.

    Advice to Management

Seek out your employees and reward them for superb effort.

    Pros

    Benefits. Co-workers (non-management). Good pay.

    Cons

Management was very selective with their favorites. Favoritism was based upon who will work extra hours for free, those with no family life. Life/Work balance was not greatly supported.

    Advice to Management

Evaluate beyond your favorites. There are good workers that deserve opportunity that can be achieved in a 40-45 hour work week.

I have been working at Exelis full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good long term stability; interesting products

    Cons

Current management is focused on the next 3 months and no long term strategy. Making decisions that are contrary to stated goals, lowest cost, best quality....

    Advice to Management

Pull their heads out of the sand and the company is more than just how many $$$ you can get.

I have been working at Exelis full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The tasks are definitely challenging my forcing you to respond quickly, thoughtfully, and efficiently.

    Cons

Management loves to disregard your schedule input and believe that they know better by only giving you 75% of the time you require to finish a particular task.

    Pros

Rewarding work, great colleagues, opportunities for travel. Compensation is decent. Projects are never dull and always assigned for accomplishment.

    Cons

Supervisors need to be refined or changed. Need to communicate to employees, not pontificate themselves. Tons of disconnect regarding employee supervisor relationship. Human resources are horrible. Work environment is more than likely an OSHA violation depending on what office or region you're in.

    Advice to Management

Know your employees, consider their needs, how they think, what they can offer, and keep lines of communication open. Curt aggressive responses are not welcome when we are trying to do the job correctly. No disconnect.

I have been working at Exelis (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Excellent technical capability with adequate backlog to sustain. Good salary and benefits with opportunities for growth potential for new employees.

    Cons

Like many companies there is a lack of longterm growth for new business. More emphasis is on meeting the numbers in the short term.

    Advice to Management

Invest in the future & develop new products. Growth should not be only organic.

    Pros

Colleagues are nice, very laid back environment.

    Cons

Big separation between HR and tech department for the branch I was working at.

    Advice to Management

Get to know what your employees want, and try not to just please the HR people.

I worked at Exelis full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great people working there. Good benefits, and good opportunity to contribute. Most people are eager to help each other in any way they can.

    Cons

Not enough systems development. Upper management not in tune with the current operating environment. Too much management by spreadsheet as opposed to actual leadership.

    Advice to Management

Stop micromanaging via databases and get to know the challenges your personnel face.
