Good people, laid back, but the parent company tries hard to spoil everything.

Software Engineer (Former Employee) Boulder, CO

ProsThis company had a very relaxed atmosphere- flexible working hours, almost no deadline pressure, no micromanagement. The software project managers are developers and work on the product right along with you. They also have the flexibility to say 'that sounds like an interesting idea- go try it out'. Most developers get shared offices, though they had started spilling over into cubicles. They make an honest effort to keep meetings and other distractions down to a reasonable minimum.

ConsThe company is very stingy when it comes to spending money. That means few promotions, minimal raises even in record sales years, and it's a battle to convince them to buy hardware or software even when you can make a very clear case for its productivity value.
The parent company is a defense contractor, the company does do some government work, and a sister company once got in major trouble for ITAR violations. Because of that, they require frequent ITAR and security training (whether it applies to you or not), and have some baffling and strict IT policies.
I got the sense that just about every bad thing about the company was pushed onto them by their parent company, and that the company was basically good and making an honest effort at insulating their employees from it.

Not the place it used to be.

    (Current Employee) Boulder, CO

ProsVery intelligent people that are passionate about the work that they are doing. Love being based in Boulder along the creek path. Feel that the work that we are doing has the capacity to change people's lives.

ConsLack of vision, strategic direction and focus is causing dismay. Significant changes in the geospatial marketplace. Leadership seems more concerned in their own survival than they are in leading the organization through this difficult period. Quickly loosing good people that have been with the company for many years. Culture and morale is deteriorating rapidly.

Advice to Senior ManagementShow faith and support in your employees instead of blaming them for falling short due to unrealistic financial numbers that have been set by the mother ship.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Good people but low pay and little opportunity

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

Prosnice location on the boulder creek, nice coworkers, good time off, flexible hours, no expectation to work more than 40hrs/wk

Consbureaucratic, top-heavy management, below average salary, promotions/raises are few and far between, and when they do happen they barely keep up with the cost of living. Opportunity for advancement is very limited, promotions are based on who sucks up to management rather than who is most qualified.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncreasing salaries by the same amount as the cost of living index is not a merit based raise. The fact that several great employees have resigned shortly after these "raises" were given should be a clue. Pay your employees what they deserve or you will lose talent and that will degrade the quality of your products and services. Look beyond the end of the quarter when it comes to determining your investment in staff.
