    Pros

They really respect their employees and encourage work-life balance in addition to good pay and all of the major holidays off. They also encourage teamwork and collaboration.

    Cons

There is a fairly high level of stress due to their status a s start up company which will continue until they start turning a profit from their one commercial product.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work.

    Pros

Employees are great, salary is excellent

    Cons

The top notch upper management of years past is gone. CEO is scattershot with actions.
If the drug ever makes it big time, then this place will take off again.

I worked at Exelixis full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    Lots of autonomy and responsibility.
Able to switch departments and learn new skill sets.
Managers are often "in the trenches" with you.
    Collegial atmosphere.

    Cons

    Management is becoming multi tiered.
The final decision about promotions are made by upper management who may not even know you.
Too many meetings and some are redundant.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize and reward talent even when a PhD isn't part of the person's background.

    Pros

Excellent management. Smart and hard working people.

    Cons

Since everyone knows the top priority of the company and department, it is a little frustrated to be assigned to the low priority projects.

    Pros

Great people and great facilities make it nice to come to work.Feels like manangement cares about employees by providing small perks such as food/snacks/cafeteria.

Managers are typically nice and responsive to employees needs.

    Cons

Like any other biotech/pharma, company performance is tied to what is in the pipeline, FDA approvals, and how much money the company is bleeding.

    Pros

Great place for personal development. Company culture was fantastic. Many opportunities to grow and expand.

    Cons

New management is only concerned with their ego, not employee welfare. Company is struggling to maintain any morale. People are seen as head count, not personally.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People don't care about how much you know, until they know about how much you care. Please make a conscious effort to show caring, not just bottom lines.

People are seemingly hired and laid off as part of an overall strategy rather than cross-training.

I have been working at Exelixis

    Pros

Great use of automation and for a time, a wonderful depth of genetics knowledge throughout the company.

    Cons

Once assays were set up by hand, many managers were reluctant to automate anything, despite high repetitive stress injuries.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on the long-term development of the people, and their loyalty will give you the FDA approval you crave faster than any "focus on execution" or other popular phrases I've heard.

    I worked at Exelixis

    Pros

You can get away with extreme incompetence and not being unprodutive. Work hours are mostly flexible. If you don't want to do anything, try to get a job at Exelixis.

    Cons

If you are somewhat productive, you will be stuck with all the workload while other people may be just sitting around and taking long lunches.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please try to recognise the competent / productive employees, not the loyal ones.

    I worked at Exelixis

    Pros

Great co-workers; fairly good benefits package; excellent inter and intra team cooperation; competent HR; great Xmas to NYE break; good employee parties; excellent severance packages per RIF 3/2010!

    Cons

Management from 2nd level upwards is duplicitous, self-centered and barely conscious. People's titles are ridiculously overstated, making "senior management" a sort of elite club of directors, etc. Little 2 way communication: the info dribbles down from top; input from below isn't actively sollicited. New president is just a retread of failed former president. I hold little hope for this company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retrench; develop some humility; flatten the organizational structures; consider outsourcing IT to a SAAS provider; pay closer attention to how your employees feel about their jobs.
