Pros
Excellent work-life balance. Hours are flexible. Of course you're expected to get the job done, but workload isn't outrageous that it's not possible in <50 hours/wk. There is the occasional week that is 60+, but no different than any other tech jobs.
Excellent benefits. The only local player with better benefits is MSFT.
Collaborative environment. People are very willing to help.
Compensation is good.
Cons
There's a definite lack of domain knowledge due to overly complex/convoluted legacy systems and turnover. Many times the older systems need to be reverse-engineered to figure out what's going on. There is a company-wide initiate to correct this.
Slow to innovate, largely due to bureaucratic overhead, overly heavy processes and paperwork to release features to production. Many teams are still not agile in their development practices, and the typical and somewhat frequent re-prioritization from management causes unneeded churn.
After 3 months, haven't been given clear picture of career path.
Advice to Senior Management
Overall Expedia is a great place to work, and it sounds like many of the previous employee complaints have/are being addressed. The bureaucracy and red tape still need to be reduced.
Pros
Moving forward on getting it together so currently feels like we are actually part of Expedia as a whole not just some external group of people that were taken over.
Cons
Immediate Supervisor are lacking in skills to effectively manage many types of A type personalities
More or less turned into email managers and you only see them when something is wrong
Advice to Senior Management
make some better choices on who gets the Job in management make sure they have the skills to work with anyone and anything Pro-Active people not reactive.
Pros
great team to work, good package and salary. Better benefits. great team to work, good package and salary. Better benefits
Cons
Slow growth opportunities. Congested office space for work. Noisy work space. Slow growth opportunities. Congested office space for work. Noisy work space.
Pros
The benefits are good. The rank and file are really pretty good to work with. People are friendly and easy to work with.
Cons
This company suffers from the curse of rapid growth. Many of the middle level managers/directors are ineffective and seem to be able to get away with doing little. If you're rocking in your current job, managment tends to keep you there, instead of looking to promote. Turnover is huge. This is a result of terrible morale.
Advice to Senior Management
It's time for a major overhaul in the organization. I would love to work there for a long, long time, but it's too difficult move up, even though I excel in my role.
Pros
good benefits and convenient location
Cons
if your manager doesn't know how to manage people your life will be miserable
Advice to Senior Management
feined appreciation is as good as none
Pros
Benefits are good and there is room to grow if you are open to relocation. Very fast paced working environment so you are never bored.
Cons
Salary is uncompetitive for the amount of work required.
Pros
Fast environment can learn alot
Cons
To many people with no experience moving up in the company
Pros
Overall, fairly competent people in some areas... If you work in a decent division, it will be a good experience. Some divisions are more turbulent than others. Wide array of job choices to choose from. Large company and overall employee treatment is decent. The illusion of job security is quite good.
Cons
Over-populated workspaces, long work hours and poor life/work balance as of late. Some groups suffer from lack of knowledge about their processes or inherited systems. Some personal much less knowledgeable than you would expect. Huge WAMU influx. Choking political policies that go against an agile dotCom mentality.
Advice to Senior Management
Get rid of the dead weight chiefs and get more indians. Don't let a slow and steady bank no-risk-taking mentality kill the required agility and fast change required by a high tech industry. We push code to provide a wide variety of travel services. The travel industry has what seems like daily changes and is constantly growing in all the different ways to travel, and enjoy a remote location....we're not doing loan risk analysis or general money handling and financials which would warrant a more cautious and bureaucratic approach.
Pros
The job is fun and you get a lot of perks from different attractions and restaurants.
Cons
Management doenst' care about their employees.
Advice to Senior Management
Change everything that you are doing.
Pros
Great travel perks, great people to work with.
Cons
Ever changing upper management with ever changing policies and procedures.
