    Pros

Great management. You get the chance to work with industry veterans who have tons of interesting stories under their belts from years of news reporting. The editors are really knowledgeable, flexible and encouraging. News reporters are in this job because it's a passion for them. They love it, and that energy is absolutely contagious. Great place to work!

    Cons

Industry is at a decline. Pay is low compared to corporate work, but the work is also much more satisfying.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest more in video, podcasts, interactive infographics.

    Pros

Newsroom employees are invested in the community and their work. Incredible teamwork. Work-life flexibility is good. Salary is average per industry/market standards. Benefits are good. Work environment is good.

    Cons

Insecurity of a changing, if not suffering industry. Sense of job security is shaky. Out-of-state corporate oversight can leave staff guessing, so better top down transparency wouldn't hurt.

    Pros

I love the industry and the people

    Cons

Management continuously moves people and accounts, as soon as you know the account your switched to another, one has to start over again. Defeats any continuity and sales. No raises for hourly staff in 6-7 years, as people leave they are not replaced so it is stressful the amount of work one has to do.

    Pros

Well, at a point in time there were many pro's to working the San Antonio Express-News and you could make great money. Management is so poor they cannot afford to pay out anybody. Only good thing is they offer sales incentives from time to time which are not that big. $50 gas card or $100 gift card.

    Cons

Where to begin? Well there are so many problems with this organization it would take to long to list all of them. Management has no clue on how to run a sales team. Starting from the Publisher, VP and Directors. The commission structures have changes so many time over the past year with increased unattainable goals. You are setup for failure from the get go. Goals are so high due to the fact there is no $ left to pay the sales reps.

People with tenure are quitting as well as new hires because its all about how much revenue can you sale and not be paid a dime for bringing in thousands of dollars. Basically you are working for you base salary which is nothing for the amount of work you have to do on a daily basis.

Management has no clue how their sales staff feels nor do I think they really care. It is only a matter of time until this paper goes to a 3 day circulation and when that happens well bye bye Express-News. The sales staff are very friendly but the moral around the office is down and people are all very upset with the recent changes that have taken place this past year. The amount of special sections and crazy ideas they come up with to try and drive more revenue is ridiculous. If you are ok selling thousands of dollars for an organization and not getting paid a commission for it then this is the right place for you. If not, do not even think about applying. Oh and the guarantee they say they will offer you for 3 months is a lie! Be sure to get this in writing because they have gone back to new hires and told them there guarantee is only good for one month. CRAZY!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop increasing goals and changing commissions. Reward your sales reps for all there hard work instead of punishing them by increasing their goals so much. Also, make wise decision when it comes to spending money on certain events and products. Training is horrible, repetitive and out of date. The digital world has so much more to offer than what is being sold. Stop playing favoritism to certain departments and truly consider the effects your recent changes have played on the organization. .

    Pros

The company health benefits are great and affordable.

    Cons

The company culture has turned from a warm and friendly environment to a cold and uncaring one. Since new management has come in, they are utilizing scare tactics to keep business rolling "as usual." In addition, positions in management are created and employees with no experience in that particular arena are chosen to fill them when upper management did not make the job open for application to the entire company, although the Express-News claims to be an equal opportunity employer. In a nutshell, favoritism and brown nosing are the standards instead of rewarding hard working and qualified employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward qualified, hard working employees with promotions instead of those who have not earned it. Take the time to learn the names of the workers in your department and not refer to them only as a color coded team. Keep the knowledgeable, talented employees and be more sensitive to those who are being let go from the company.

    Pros

Excellent Health, Vision and Dental plans.

    Cons

Horrible and obvious Favorites... only if you are a major suck-up.
No one is held accountable for their work or lack of it.
The managers are only given that position if 1) They kiss the right person's butt or 2) they don't know what else to do with them.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Listen to your employees
    Most of all.. RESPECT THEM!

    Good health benefits.

    Cons

Low Salary. Dying industry. Scrambling to offer poor online services in efforts to offset decreasing revenue and readership.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The "girls club" running the paper make poor decisions based upon their feelings and not what is best for business.

    Pros

The management team has it's ups and downs, but for the most part if *great* to work for. And they pay commission handsomely.

    Cons

No real room to grow, management needs to wake up and talk to the employees about what is wrong with the company instead of just hiring from without all the time to try and bring in new blood.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiring from outside the company or bringing in people from other areas of the country - try hiring from within and you'll have people who can address the issues because they will KNOW what the issues are.
