    Pros

I haven't worked for the Express-News for 16 years but the scroll down bar doesn't go that far back. It was a wonderful learning experience working there. My managers were patient, kind and fair.

    Cons

Newspapers are becoming a thing of the past. They eliminated the creative department years ago so applying as an artist would be futile. They outsource all their work now.

    Advice to Management

    Good luck to you all.

    Pros

Started as a delivery person, then moved up to Sales Assistant, then Sales Executive and finally Online Sales. Great people to work with, benefits were good.

    Cons

Due to corporates misguided focus on keeping the print products as the main source of revenue rather than shifting focus to online, the company has had a wage freeze for all employees for the past 5 years and the freeze will continue next year for sure. Sales is virtually pure commission and if you don't make your goals, you're gone. And selling print products is more difficult every year.

    Advice to Management

Put more emphasis on selling online products and ease the sales goals of print products. Give the employees the raises they've been denied for the past 5 years instead of hiring more mid/upper mgmt. Develop your website more.

    Pros

There was very little I couldn't do as a reporter there, lots of freedom in that sense. But at the end of the day they wanted you to cover the same old things, the same old ways, and if you couldn't find someone to back you up, you never got to do anything cool.

    Cons

So much bad management, infighting, nepotism, cliquish, just a toxic work environment.

    Pros

Great coworkers. Great team interdepartmental cooperation. Boss who gives it his all.

    Cons

No corporate support. Felt out of touch and unappreciated. Company meeting and exceeding goals never made it to the employees who got the job done.

    Advice to Management

Give back s little before you lose it all.

    Pros

The company has a good benefits package and good IT support. There is room for personal growth and advancement for those willing to work very hard and very smart. Working conditions are good (work space, ventilation, lighting) and the copier & fax equipment is as good as it gets, for a company still using fax pools vs. PC fax capabilities.

    Cons

There is a high level of turnover, which places a drag on everybody's productivity when trying to "spread the work" to cover a dark desk. The bonus or commission plan changes frequently, making it difficult to anticipate or project any kind of personal income planning. The directives from management change so frequently, that it's difficult to find a good personal productive stride. Everything is Top-Down; ideas from sales people are dismissed without discussion.

    Advice to Management

Be consistent in your planning, strategic initiatives and communications to sales staff without contradiction. Evaluate the reason for high turnover. And most importantly, ask for feedback and listen to what you hear. And calculate the true business cost of turnover. You may find that it's cheaper to pay people a little better, so they wont' leave, than it is to replace them. Find a way to manage with enthusiasm rather than creating fear.

    Pros

Great management. You get the chance to work with industry veterans who have tons of interesting stories under their belts from years of news reporting. The editors are really knowledgeable, flexible and encouraging. News reporters are in this job because it's a passion for them. They love it, and that energy is absolutely contagious. Great place to work!

    Cons

Industry is at a decline. Pay is low compared to corporate work, but the work is also much more satisfying.

    Advice to Management

Invest more in video, podcasts, interactive infographics.

    Pros

I love the industry and the people

    Cons

Management continuously moves people and accounts, as soon as you know the account your switched to another, one has to start over again. Defeats any continuity and sales. No raises for hourly staff in 6-7 years, as people leave they are not replaced so it is stressful the amount of work one has to do.

    Pros

Newsroom employees are invested in the community and their work. Incredible teamwork. Work-life flexibility is good. Salary is average per industry/market standards. Benefits are good. Work environment is good.

    Cons

Insecurity of a changing, if not suffering industry. Sense of job security is shaky. Out-of-state corporate oversight can leave staff guessing, so better top down transparency wouldn't hurt.
