    I worked at Extra Foods

    Pros

I made a lot of good friends working here. The job was easy and the training was good.

    Cons

There is very few opportunities to move up and you don't get any raises until you bank an outrageous number of hours (about three years full time and they never hire full time).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay your staff what they are worth!

I worked at Extra Foods part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Hours were steady/predictable. No weekends or stats - those hours are reserved for management only. Part-time work was okay. Always busy, no downtime or opportunity to become bored with work.

    Cons

Horrible pay. Management doesn't acknowledge you or even know you exist until there is a problem. Supervisors are waaay too young - the last one I had (and I had 3 in less than a year), was 20. Time constraints for breaks/lunch felt like being watched by Big Brother. Serious issues with paycheques being inaccurate or not being issued at all.
Uncomfortable/lonely/depressing work atmosphere. NO community involvement on local levels. Inadequate and depressing staff/lunch room. Not a place I looked forward to going to every day.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to employees. Too much power/preference is given to supervisors/store managers. The pay/union split between employees and supervisors is really poor for staff morale. Supervisors need more/better training in supervision roles/communication and management - should be hiring supervisors with previous experience or Business Management education.

I have been working at Extra Foods

    Pros

staff and management fantastic, good people to work with but the cost of living here in fort McMurray is making it almost impossible to work here

    Cons

wages suck, not nearly enough money, $14 per hour is not a competitive wage here in fort mcmurray. It needs to be upgraded to $20 per hour to even begin to be competitive. You don't realize the rent here is $3000 per month and $14 per hour just doesn't work! And cutting down hours, What's that about! Making it even harder to make ends meet!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give everyone at least 40 hours per week and a starting wage of $20 per hour and you will keep your employees. You must have noticed your employee turn over is rediculous. Stop wasting everyones time with training people who in a few weeks realize they have to quit cause they just can't work for such small wages and live here in fort mac! Raise the rate of pay and you will keep good employees!
