Pros
If you take the time to understand the culture, you will do very well. Exxon has a very strong culture. It has been around for +100 years and they are proud of it. Don't try to change it, but rather understand it and you enjoy a bright future. One of the best reasons to work for Exxon is the assignment opportunities they provide if you prove worthy, in addition to the benefits.
Cons
Its a very old culture. Slow to change and adapt. You should find your place in it in order to enjoy a bright career. Seldom anyone will guide you through it. Its your job to ask and seek then you will find.
Advice to Senior Management
Slowly you are assigning key leaders in top positions. Visionary individuals. That is an excellent move, however, you should make them accessible by the employees and not filtered through narrow minded, powerpoint driven, bureaucratic managers.
Pros
-truly global environment
-ability to travel
-ability to learn and understand different cultures in work
-carrier development opportunities towards mgmt positions
-good compensation package, paid overtime hours
If you are a starter, with little or no work experience, with lower educational background, but interested in moving up the ladder, energetic in social settings, "politically correct", then this company is for you.
Cons
-disappointing overall level of professional IT knowledge (many IT analysts doesnt even have an IT degree!!)
-little or no opportunities for professional development
-low employee morale at the bottom level (lots of starters)
-open office is noisy in certain countries
-all new employees are treated as starters
If you are a trained professional, with many years of work experience at different organizations, have a strong educational background, prefer to act rather than talk, strive on proffessional development, then this company is not for you.
Advice to Senior Management
Forget moving all jobs in-house from contractors and third parties. Keeping the most professional staff is not a strength of your organization.
Pros
employee benefits are excellent and stability
Cons
if you do good you stay in position forever....if you do bad you move around positions...if you play the game well you move up the ladder
Advice to Senior Management
be fair....some mgmt is good and fair and some are not
Pros
The only real positive is stability of the company due to its size. If you are interested in international work the opportunities certainly exist.
Cons
The company uses the Exxon name as a selling point that they assume carries some weight when their pay and benefits do not measure up to industry standard. Coming from an independent O&G producer recently bought by Exxon, we used to make fun of them because we operated better, faster & cheaper. We worked hard because we achieved results without political red tape and were paid accordingly in addition to great benefits.
Advice to Senior Management
If you expect to operate like an independent then follow independent industry pay and benefits.
Pros
Company is very focused on work life balance for employees and making sure employees are able to focus on family and community activities.
Cons
Unable to see internal company postings like other oil and gas companies.
Advice to Senior Management
None
Pros
Good opportunities to develop professionally.
Competitive compensation package.
Cons
Low morale in the workplace, sometimes leading to bullying.
Low quality leadership, rigidity.
Advice to Senior Management
.
Pros
Wellness days in every quarter and the Christmas parties are great
Truly global environment, you can use almost any of your language you learnt.
Cons
The overtime you have to work there is just amazing. You never have the feeling of something is completed.
Company pays on or below sector avarage in most of the positions.
Advice to Senior Management
Keep your employees really motivated. There are lots of tools outside you just need to be open and flexible to use them.
Pros
Great place to work for upstream research, good lifestyle, nice people
Cons
Not much business exposure, so if you want to transfer to business related career, it will be harder
Advice to Senior Management
More business exposure
Pros
Salary and benefits are great. They have flexible hours plus plenty of flex time for personal things. Lots of smart people.
Cons
Ridiculous processes for everything. It can take many months to get requests pushed through (unless it's regarding safety of course). The process and red tape can be extremely frustrating.
Advice to Senior Management
Relax on all the procedures. I know it's the ExxonMobil way, but it's a frustrating to have to deal with that for every little thing.
Pros
Great people, great mix of cultures and ages.
Good salary for the work being done
Good opportunities to progress if in the right place with the right skills
Cons
Limited progression once you have moved up the first couple of steps
Very limited opportunities to move on from the Manchester office
Advice to Senior Management
Be more open with the employees about what is going on and listen to feedback rather than just asking for it for lipservice.
