    Engineer

Mechanical Engineer (Former Employee) Houston, TX

ProsGreat pay and benefits. Really very easy work. Actually too easy. I felt like I was doing the same thing over and over again and not learning.

ConsVery political environment. If you don't value the environment and believe that oil will never be challenged by other fuels, you'll be fine. If you have an open mind you are going to have a tough time in this culture.

Advice to Senior ManagementPeople are so set in their ways here that it seems pointless to even give advice.

    Good company, bad location

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee) Houston, TX

ProsGreat pay and personal development. If you are interested they move you to a different position every couple of years so you don't get bored.

ConsYou need to find a champion if you want to climb the ladder. Houston wasn't a good location for me. I had a boss in a different country and that proved difficult.

Thanks for the feedback. Sorry Houston did not work out. The city is rapidly changing and improving while maintaining a low cost of living thanks to the growth of the US energy sector.

Enjoyed my time spent with the company, but they dropped the ball

    Intern (Former Employee) Houston, TX

ProsBest at what they do (arguably)

ConsA true, modern mega-corp (tremendous compartmentalization)

Advice to Senior ManagementThis train has already left the station - no stopping it now.

Exxon Mobil provides good career opportunities but has a rigid corporate structure and is not for everyone.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsExxon Mobil employees tend to be very bright and dedicated to their work. You get job security and opportunities for different assignments.

ConsExxon Mobil is a very rigid corporate structure and there's not a lot of room for original thinking. If you do not fit the culture or their idea of a good engineer you will not be happy. Their compensation is average compared to most large companies and below average compared to other oil & gas majors or energy companies.

    Great Company

Senior Project Engineer (Current Employee) Houston, TX

ProsI've spent all my career in the Upstream, I've heard Downstream and Chemicals can be quite different:

Excellent pay and benefits, including pension
    Lots of challenging assignments
    Frequently move to different positions
Many international assignments for those that want it
Excellent early career training and career development tracks / planning

ConsNew assignments and assignment locations are decided without enough input from employee
Rankings are not transparent and often lead to bad attitudes by lower rankers
Work/life balance can be very challenging; those that want to rank high typically work a lot of hours
Moving up the ranks within the company requires willingness to frequently relocate which can be difficult for those with families

Advice to Senior ManagementPlace a stronger emphasis on the employee and their desires / strengths
Promote managers and supervisors who demonstrate putting employees first
Consider implementation of 9/80 work weeks to stay competitive with other companies

Thanks for the feedback. We have a number of great workplace flexibility programs to help balance work and life without requiring the structure of the 9/80 program.

    Dilbert

    Technical Specialist (Former Employee)

    ProsPays fairly well. Promote volunteerism.

ConsUnbelieveable amount of rules. Very rigid. Must be an engineer to have opportunities.

Advice to Senior ManagementHire leaders, not 4.0gpa engineers to have no idea about how to run a business or how to relate to other humans.
