    Pros

(Unique to law dept)-- Law firm partner level pay, insanely good almost unlimited first class travel, autonomy, really easy, few hours, ability to outsource all of one's work with very little pushback from anyone. Executive pay is outrageously good and even mid-level lawyer eventually earn hundreds of thousands a year in stock and bonuses (after 15-20 years of experience). About 10% or so of the law department makes 1M+ and 35% make 500+

    Cons

No nexus between pay and performance, pretty bad management, zero diversity of thought (groupthink is rampant), location in exurbs of Houston, pay structure for senior employees incentivizes bad/lazy behavior since 60% or more of one's pay is discretionary and can be taken away at any time, so managers in particular have no incentive to do anything but hide/avoid being noticed and suck up. It's a nerdy management culture where the nerds promote their dorky proteges, creating an endless cycle of dorks who act like mean drunks (drunk from the insane amount of money they make for doing very little work)

    Advice to Management

After many years I have determined that advice is futile for most of them. It may benefit some of them to realize they would probably fail in any well managed company, so a little humility might help.

    Pros

great pay and benefits if you can handle the cons

    Cons

It has a cult like and somewhat intimidating atmosphere with "Big Brother" looking over your shoulder. This is exemplified by the current use of the old Jack Welch system of ranking employees, albeit without the layoffs. Career progression is systematic and secretive (head down and trust the system). Some of management seems to struggle (or have zero desire) to hold a conversation on topics other than company business.

    Pros

Stable Company Great Retirement Benefits (Pension, 401k match, etc.)

    Cons

With the consolidation of all U.S. employees to their new campus in the Woodlands, working for ExxonMobil means that you are signing up to live in Houston for 30 years. Once you are with the company for more than 10 years, they make it very difficult (financially) to leave, so get out before that if you don't want to be in Houston.

    Advice to Management

Stop continually being 10 years behind industry trends.
