    Pros

F.H. Paschen has been a great place to work. There is variety in the types of projects that F.H. Paschen takes on, which is nice because the employees all have different backgrounds and are great resources on the projects. The company is also focused on holding on to good employees by shifting them to different divisions in the same office if needed because of more work or better employee opportunity.

    Cons

Due to the nature of construction, not all employees get an opportunity to know the office staff because they are working on projects in the field. Also, promotions can be slower than deserved because of timing on projects. For example, a project engineer may be ready to manage a project but they are a key part of a current project and would hurt the job to remove them early.

    Advice to Management

Acknowledge your employee's hard work and continue to reward them.

    Pros

They have a majority of friendly and helpful people. It feels like a family. Interns go on field trips, designed to be fun and educational. They have a lot of material for a college student to learn about the business.

    Cons

About a third of the time, I was waiting for something to do. It wasn't so much of a bad thing as it allowed me time to study material about the business, since it was my first internship.

    Advice to Management

Have an option for interns to rotate supervisors so they are able to learn the different fields of the company.

    Pros

First job I had in the field of Construction. I learned a lot at this firm. Contracts with City, Billable hours for GC as well as contractors. Punchlist work and closeout submittals and how it all related to the general conditions for final pay application to be approved

    Cons

Not new to long work hours nor the hour work hours needed in the field - I had worked long and early hours during my time in the military. What was hard was learning the solutions to subcontractors paper work , the backup needed to attach to the GC side for Owner or Arch approval. This is a skill you learn as you go , because so many trades have different areas they are go in and need help in. I found myself doing many levels of paper work as well as notary for subs.

    Advice to Management

No advice for me. Just that I enjoy this field very much and Paschen helped me gain a high sense of confidence to navigate as each Owner and project changed.

    Pros

Great exposure to a variety of different aspects of construction. Construction projects usually last for 1-2 years, so you are never on one job for too long.

    Cons

Work days are never just 8 hours, weekend/night work from time to time. Promotions are hard to come by.

Tons of opportunities to take you as far as you want to go. If you want experience and responsibility they will give it to you.

The company runs lean, most projects are understaffed, lack of training for new hires, learn on the fly mentalty

    Advice to Management

    Pros

Good opportunity to learn and grow career. Powerful company with lots of management backing on projects. Most employees are easy to get along with and helpful. Very proactive training routine. Upper management is very approachable and willing to help when needed.

    Cons

Like most commercial contractors, long work hours. Stressful at times. They expect a lot from employees and failure is not an option.

    Advice to Management

Let your employees manage projects and trust them to ask for help when needed

Opportunities to move up quick, trusting management.

    Cons

Long hours, limited system with one way of doing business, an organization that learns on the fly.

Be open to changing the system to accommodate business needs.

    Pros

They treated me fairly, gave me the training I needed, and let me earn more responsibilities as I progressed through my three internships.

    Cons

Some of the nature of general contracting. Lots of paperwork such as as-built postings and submittable review. Also, incompetent subcontractors that are hard to talk to.

    Advice to Management

There is none. Every manager I had was competent and answered all my questions. Well structured firm to work for.
