    Pros

Important mission. Great coworkers. You get a sense of being elite.

    Cons

The bureau is great but it's not perfect. If you're not an agent you can have a Phd but you're second tier and always will be. But being on the pit crew of a winning team is still rewarding even if you're not the driver.

    Pros

    - Unique work that's hard to find anywhere else in the government or private sector.
    - High level of autonomy to manage cases if you prove you can get things done.
    - Prestige of working for the FBI - the Bu does a great job with brand management.
    - Interesting training opportunities.
    - Dedicated coworkers and camaraderie at the agent level.
    - New FBI Director seems genuine and intent on fixing things.
    - Pay is pretty competitive, though COLA needs to be adjusted to take into account high tax rates in certain locations that impact actual take home pay.
    - Schedule is pretty flexible as long as you get your work done and make progress with your cases.

    Cons

    - For every interesting thing you do, you have to submit endless paperwork requiring 20 levels of review. Endless virtual training on every possible liability.
    - The Bu is fearful of lawsuits and can be paralyzed to act by its lawyers.
    - Senior management is out of touch with what is going on at the ground level.
    - Stress on "chain of command" leaves management ignorant of issue affecting personnel - and although managers want you to use chain of command, they are often too spineless to go to bat for you.
    - The random, secretive, and illogical way you get your first assignment - it drives the nature of your entire career thereafter because every office is run differently.
    - It is a "me-first" organization. Agents primarily work alone and then are promoted to management positions with no training on how to be a leader. Managers are focused on stats to feed the Headquarters machine and barely get to know the people that work for them.
    - The FBI is a series of fiefdoms and each is interested in only protecting and growing their corner of the world. The power grabbing and back stabbing that occurs over big cases is shameful. Offices grow programs beyond their ability to staff them.
    - Transfers from the large offices especially are very hard to come by. It's all about knowing someone where you want to go who will write a intricately specific vacancy announcement for the person they intend to hire. The most qualified doesn't always get picked.
    - If your management doesn't want you to take an opportunity, there's nothing you can do to dispute it.
    - Lots of promises made that didn't turn out to be accurate.
    - Support staff range from retired in place to underutilized.

    Advice to Management

Make leadership training a priority. Make promotions possible without being forced to HQ. Promote that trusts employees to find answers they don't currently have so there's not a frenzy by management to protect their own behinds. Look to the military on leadership training and meritocracy. Fix assignments and transfers.

    Pros

Most of the "worker bees" really want to do their job to the best of their abilities.

    Cons

Management is intently concerned with making themselves look good and get the next promotion, mission is irrelevant.

    Advice to Management

Quit trying to massage the numbers. Exercise some leadership instead of "me-ship."

    Pros

People are wonderful to work with
    Work is interesting definitely unique
    Benefits are wonderful
Experiences are ones you'll never forget
Opportunities for the outside are great with the experience you gain here

    Cons

    Lack of upward mobility
    Too political

    Advice to Management

Stop "rewarding" employees for doing such a great job by keeping them stuck in the same positions forever. Take the time to cultivate new employees to replace the ones that are "invaluable".
