FBI Special Agent in Washington, DC:   (Current Employee)

3 of 3 people found this helpful

Pros

#1 The mission. The only reason I haven't left yet is because of the mission to which I'm attached as a special agent with the FBI. No matter how broken it is here, we do prevent terrorist attacks, catch spies, put criminals in jail, etc... but I would offer we as Special Agents do that in spite of the organization in which we work - not because of it.
#2 The stability. I will ALWAYS have a job here and I'm NEVER at risk for losing it.

Cons

Bureaucracy prevent innovation and upward mobility. Promotions are NOT based on competency, but upon tiime in grade. Often, eneptitude is rewarded with a promotion simply to get the person out of the way. Unfortunately, this still means they were promoted, thereby "checking a box" for career advancement. This is how we get management with no true leadership skills. Often those that would make the best leaders never raise their hand for promotion as "checking the boxes" would distract them from their mission.

Advice to Senior Management

Create an environment where leadership is rewarded, not a "to do" list to become a manager.

Seniority is rewarded through increased time off per pay period

Cons

Poor salary especially compared to the cost of living the capitol area

Advice to Senior Management

Almost all of the negatives about the job comes from the regulations imposed by the Department of Justice and not necessarily the Federal Bureau of Investigation

FBI Anonymous in Washington, DC:   (Current Employee)

Pros

The pride that comes from working at a distinguished agency such as the FBI takes the cake. Knowing that your job plays a part in keeping the country safe - in either helping support the mission of the FBI or being directly involved in the investigative side - makes the job well worth it. The benefits are standard OPM benefits, but FBI employees are treated as family. There are several activities for employees to partake in, such as volleyball, ice hockey, basketball, karate, and so on.

Cons

Unfortunately, the Special Agents of the FBI are really THE core of the Bureau, so any non-agent will always take a back seat to them.

Advice to Senior Management

Communicate. Listen to us and keep us up to date with what you're doing. It's as simple as that. While it is so simple, it often gets overlooked.
