    Pros

Very few at the Center for Drug Research. Its as if the drinking water has some chemical substance and they've all drunk at the wheel.

    Cons

No parking, cramped offices, nasty folks, why bother. No creativity, lots of templates, but poor systems to help locate what is needed. Lots of wasted time doing projects that don't go anywhere - the Chief Counsel's office vetos almost everything.

    Advice to Management

Bring some real attorneys in house who work for you and not the department. Don't assign busywork - you are wasting taxpayer resources.

    Pros

As a research fellow, the pay rate is OK. Of course higher than being a research assistant at school. Good life-work balance.

    Cons

Such life style may not be what you like ......

  6. Helpful (1)

Interesting work and opportunities, some government bureaucracy

    Pros

Public health mission underneath it all. In general, people who work there are good, dedicated in my opinion. For those early in career, you'll learn quite a bit and gain broad exposure. For those late in career, stability. Work-life balance is what you make of it. Flexible workplace arrangements, when exercised, are a good option for all.

    Cons

Government bureaucracy can be frustrating. Change is non-existent at times. The negative effects of the political process (e.g. Shutdown) at times can be maddening.

    Advice to Management

Change culture to empower employees. They work for the public, not for you.

    Pros

great experience, very versatile and a lot of freedom to get things accomplished.

    Cons

Slow moving. Could use a bit more structure/communication in the hiring process.

    Advice to Management

    Compensation and training more structured.

    Pros

Very good opportunity for those wanting stability and work-life balance. Many people are drawn to mission focus and are dedicated to their work. If not experienced, the breadth of exposure and training opportunities are generally a plus. People are generally good.

    Cons

Government bureaucracy and typical federal employee stereotypes exist. Career advancement can be slow and you're affected by nonsensical political by products (budgets, shutdowns). Management lacks leadership and increasingly resembles political employees the higher you go up the chain. Risk averse culture of thinking in all ways and inability of system to change for the better.

    Pros

Learn both practical and theoretical knowledge with the research done here, as findings at the FDA will directly impact the regulatory base for the industry

    Cons

Process of exploring and applying findings to new papers or regulations is very slow.

    Advice to Management

Very good learning experience for the interns. Giving a list of pre-requisite readings or knowledge base would help clarify the aim of some of the projects.

    Pros

New mandates providing new requirement occur every few years, makes for dynamic environment. Opportunities to work from home multiple days a week, mentoring, and training

    Cons

Change, as with much of government, is slow. Federal funding to support non-mandated, yet needed, programs are dependent of available fiscal funds
