STILL the greatest job in the world!

Firefighter (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at FDNY full-time for more than 5 years

ProsSatisfying work with immediate results, make a difference in someone's life, comradery (a second family of sorts), time off (schedule is somewhat flexible), decent pay.

Consdangerous and potentially deadly, stressful, long term health issues are a very real problem (cancers and physical disabilities), exhausting, guaranteed to miss holidays and family events.

Advice to Senior ManagementMake advances in new equipment available to the members faster.

Fdny emt

Fdny Emt (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at FDNY full-time for less than a year

ProsGreat job security, great benefits, lots of promotional opportunity if your lucky enough to make it over to fire after a min. of 2 long years of service.

ConsHorrible hours, crappy pay, lack of unity on ems side, people will throw each other under the bus, too many bosses telling you what to do, super easy to get written up, bad work environment with each ambulance sitting on a street corner. Get burnt out real quick. No motivation to better yourself, no bonuses, hour for hour type of job. Great job if you want to do nothing with your life except the bare minimum.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop the trickle down effect of higher command yelling at capts yelling at lts, then us at the bottom getting the worst of it.

No, I would not recommend this company to a friend – I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Great internship experience

Certifications Intern (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at FDNY as an intern

ProsIt was good to work with the FDNY at their headquarters, and learning about all the issues the certifications department is faced with. It was also good to meet fire chiefs. Flexible schedule.

ConsThe work was a bit repetitive and the results on the projects were limited to what the need of the current certifications tests were. There aren't too many good places to eat nearby.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep it up.

Not a bad job

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
Brooklyn, NY

I have been working at FDNY

ProsRetirement packages were above par compared to non union, non city workers. Disability was a plus. Great job if you dont have a college degree.

ConsLack of communication from upper mangement is like an iron curtain. No one knows what is going on and chiefs make up rules as they see fit.

Advice to Senior ManagementI wish they would commuicate more to the emts and medics in the field. We need to know how to improve before we are punished for non sense.
