New people, Same song and dance

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe discount is the only benefit really. I enjoy working with like minded individuals but I could also just hang out with them outside of work... which would be a lot more fun.

ConsOver worked manager's, district managers that are distant from the store and unable to see the smaller picture within a store. Very difficult to advance unless you have a manager who is willing to help, most of the time they just seem afraid that you'll replace them. A head office that is very separated from the retail side, making it conflicting when one company wide directive comes out.
The mission statement is also a bit of a joke, because if you work full time your manager begrudges you any time you request off. They want you to promote their mission statement but they won't let you live their mission statement.

Advice to Senior ManagementStop holding people back, with the rapid growth of the company not only Fgl branded stores but CTC stores as well, the more you train and grow people who will help you grow. Figure out who your star players are and get them on your side.

    Frustrating place to work.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Calgary, AB (Canada)

    ProsGenerally laid back atmosphere.
    Nice discounts.
Company tries hard to have events to lighten the mood.
    Stability.
Large company you see everywhere and you can be proud to be a part of.

ConsRaises are almost non-existent - even when company is flourishing. No explanation of why.
    Opportunities to advance are limited.
Tenure is not at all considered in pay or opportunities.
HR claims wages are competitive, but they generally are not.
In my particular area of the company, we are worked very hard with little in way of compensation or recognition from our superiors.

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease realize that it costs a lot more to train someone new than it does to pay just a little more and keep your team happy. It also tarnishes the company name for future recruitment.

Great long term growth and investment, however challenging experience on work life balance.

    Buyer (Current Employee)
    Calgary, AB (Canada)

    ProsCareer advancement
    Training and development
    Perks (staff discount)

ConsNegative view to work life balance
    Inconsistent compensation strategies
    Culture of micromanagement

Advice to Senior ManagementEncourage upper management to allow mid level managers to drive the day to day decision making in their position. Too much decision by committee- if a strong understanding of the company direction is fostered, then there should be limited need to have buy in from 2-3 people on every decision.

Place greater priority on work life balance- if an employee contributes then they should not be made to feel guilty every time they make a vacation time request, especially if that vacation time is within their position/ tenure based allotment.

Greater equality of compensation with other industries in the city (ex oil and gas) for management / specialist positions with transferable skills.
