    Pros

good place to start your career or get good experience in construction documents. i started there straight out of school and got to work on some good-sized projects. the overall dynamic of the office (oak brook location) was pretty good but there are some people there that have big egos and are not very approachable if you are not part of their inner circle...expect typical office politics here.

As an intern architect (not licensed) it was a good place to jump start my idp training, and some of the project managers are really helpful.

    Cons

you get stuck in a corner at one position for too long doing the same thing over and over again...it's almost like a production line for architecture, but alot of firms are set up that way. if you go in expecting to start as a drafter and end up as the head of the office, it's not going to happen. have realistic expectations about getting some good design development and construction document experience while you are there and then you can move on to somewhere else.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

don't pigeon-hole people into a position, if there is an open spot, it's better to see who wants to step up to the challenge rather than higher some "hot shot" to come in and get on everyone's nerves.

    Pros

Salary on average with other companies. Strong, but very small core group in upper management, know their business, and they do it well. They court their clients and have a solid reputation for professionalism and quality of work. Steady work flow thanks to equally strong marketing and sales team. Big contributors to charities, community organizations, and events. Most employees are friendly and willing to help each other at every opportunity.

    Cons

An architectural/design factory where project work is piece work. You make the same piece for every project. Opportunity is stymied and creativity stifled by the management style. Expect to work very long hours without compensation or overtime if you are salaried.

Upper management is stuffy and old school, unfriendly and unapproachable to most employees. They throw cocktail parties and wonder why no one sticks around to enjoy the drinks after the company status report. They have no idea who their employees are, nor do they seem to care, they take no interest in employees as people.

Middle management as a whole is crippled by infighting and intense rivalry caused by a toxic supervisor with a hot temper in their midst. Jealous of other middle managers, resistant to change proposed by peers, while eagerly taking credit for their hard work and ideas in their absence. Employees and middle managers alike fear retaliation, so they remain silent, or speak in hush hush tones while constantly glancing over their shoulder to be sure this middle manager isn't eavesdropping.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to be personable, take interest in your employees. Recognize and reward good work immediately. Encourage creativity, and provide a safe environment that allows for open and honest discussion. Form project teams with mentors to train new employees, so they can learn how to manage a project from start to finish, and develop their skills to their full potential. Recognize a toxic manager when you see one, do something about it, retrain them, or get rid of them.

    I worked at FGM Architects

    Pros

Great employee devotion and sense of community. Everyone works well together and helps to create the best solution possible for the client. With dedicated staff with extensive professional experience, there are a number of different people who can be relied on for advice and information. The depth of projects is remarkable and the company is very willing to give interns as much responsibility ad they can handle.

    Cons

The office layout and design could be better and more modern. As an Architects office it could be more than a generic floor in a generic office building. Also, there are some issues with assigining limited roles to each person rather than allowing people to work through the entire project. There is the "design" team as well as the "technical" team and often a project gets handed from one team to the other with little interaction between the two. This can allow for information to be missed and the design intent can be lost. Also, the firm does not do cost-estimation for projects in house but instead relies on construction managers which can lead to less flexibility in design.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Avoid pigeon-holing employees into what they are good at and give more opportunities for development in other areas required for IDP.
