Good Coworkers, good mission, too much in-fighting from senior mgmt

    Business Partner (Current Employee)
    Topeka, KS

ProsFHLBank mission "helping members build communities" makes you want to work here. Coworkers are great, professional, most want to work and make a difference. Great benefits, wonderful work environment, you get the tools and training you need.

Cons- Too much infighting in the senior mgmt ranks with 2 camps. Follow what one group tells you to do and you may get left on the ledge if the other side questions what you are doing.
    - Too slow at making changes. Must jump through hoops with potential risks even for minor changes. It feels like Congress - talk everything to death and the one who can talk/write the most wins even if it's not the best solution. CEO always traveling (for work purposes) and doesn't get involved.

Advice to Senior ManagementDecide what you want us to do and get an agreement to support it from both sides - even if one group would prefer something else. Let's accept some risk and move forward.

A busy environment that takes into account your personal life.

    Information Technology (Current Employee)
    Topeka, KS

ProsFHLBank Topeka focuses on work-life balance and does everything they can to ensure you have quality family time. In addition, they encourage and assist in personal growth.

ConsThe Information Technology department has management that lacks a backbone or structure.

Advice to Senior ManagementHold people in IT accountable and do what you say you're going to do.

    Fair and honest

    IT Staff (Current Employee)
    Topeka, KS

ProsGood work-life balance, positive people, collaborative, agile, single technology stack, good planning efforts, opportunities to learn, great facility, awesome bonus plan... But not really a bonus because it is used to " bring your salary up to market"

ConsVery old technology, decisions frequently become analysis paralysis, basic tasks take a long time due to rigorous processes and red tape, bonus is not based on your individual performance, for a wealthy organization they are stingy with technology

Advice to Senior ManagementMake decisions, dictate a direction, then move the teams into action. Update technology proactively rather than waiting for it to go unsupported. Hold managers accountable... Talk to the manager's employees.

    – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

Good place to work and retire

    Programmer Analyst (Current Employee)
    Topeka, KS

ProsVery family friendly environment. They reimburse fees for wide variety of courses. Very flexible environment. They provide with many paid training opportunities.

ConsBeing a small company there are very few opportunities for growth.
Political correctness pays more than performance at the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementEmployees especially the middle management are rarely held accountable. Therefore there is not much pressure on employees to perform to the fullest.

Small, stable organization with good salary and nice perks.

    Information Technology (Former Employee)
    Topeka, KS

ProsUpper management very accessible. Great small-company feel where you can get to know everyone. Bank-wide events like summer family events, Christmas parties and United Way weeks. Great perks (free fruit, subsidized vending/snacks, on-site café/child care). Competitive pay and great benefits package. Politically active – common for standing Senators or Representatives to stop by to deliver speeches, meet constituents and Q&A. Quarterly company-wide town hall meetings. Great training opportunities.

ConsDownside of any small organization – limited opportunities for vertical promotion. The organization is locked into a geographic area, very difficult to grow. Personnel increases are typically driven by regulation and are oversight-oriented. Significant regulatory pressure and burdens to operational staff. Despite the best of intentions, staff may feel like there is always someone looking over their shoulder. The benefits create golden handcuffs; some that have been there for an extended period of time can lose perspective.

Advice to Senior ManagementExpect more from all tiers of management. Hold them accountable for addressing performance/staffing issues. Strive to maintain the current culture. Facilitate mutual respect and collaboration throughout the organization, especially throughout the management chain.

Good for learning, not good for long term health

    Programmer Analyst (Current Employee)
    Topeka, KS

ProsAgile environment, good benefits, good support for travel for training.
This is a decent job for anyone starting out to learn skills and be challenged.
Senior management is very friendly (middle management not so much).

ConsVery high stress environment. Expect to work long hours and possibly overnights any time one of their fragile systems break. Management does not care about employees home lives or happiness at work. You are a resource, get used to it.
    Programming in VB.net.

Advice to Senior ManagementSpend more time and money improving products that were rushed out the door and are too fragile. Show some interest in keeping your employees happy.

IT - Great place to work with new technologies

    Programmer Analyst (Former Employee)
    Topeka, KS

ProsAwesome work culture. Everyone is very friendly and shares knowledge. You really feel like you are part of a team here.
Agile based methodologies. You will find there is usage of OSS tools and the latest technologies.
Not much overtime. I worked maybe three Saturdays and I was there >5 years.
If you are from out of town, there are some telecommute options one day a week.
In a recession they hire people, so stability is good. It really feels like you are part of a family. Training is encouraged and there are professional learning opportunities.
You are given the right amount of autonomy to make decisions.
It is a great place to work. The normal shelf life of an IT person at the bank is 3.5 years when the industry has only 2yrs on average, so they must be doing something right.

ConsThe pay is not the best for the area, but the benefits make up for that. Career progression in line with the same area (ie. developer 1 to developer 2) is slower than it should be, but that may have been fixed.

Advice to Senior ManagementIf you have not already looked at fixing the career progression and advancement, definitely look at that. It's one of the only things I can really find fault with at the bank.

This is a great place to work, very nice and friendly atmosphere.

    Programmer Analyst (Former Employee)
    Topeka, KS

ProsThe work culture is very good. Mostly agile based development.
Don't work you overtime(very rare). Room for growth professionally. Use new technology and tools.
Work hard/ Play hard environment. Great benefits.Have a nice retirement package.Every employee is treated as a partner, so bonuses are based on yearly profits. Stability in this recession.Training on new technologies and self improvement always encouraged.
Altogether its a wonderful place to work.

ConsIf you can handle the nasty politics then you are game. Micro-management at every level.
Implementing new technologies every other day wears people out. They need to figure out a few good tools and stick to it for at least 3 years.

Advice to Senior ManagementQuit micro-managing the employees.

FHLB is a great place to work. IT department... not so much.

    (Former Employee)

ProsOpportunity to learn new technology and processes.
    Bank management (C-level) is excellent.
    Great perks. Great co-workers.

ConsCronyism is rampant in IT. The worst part is that it is painfully obvious.
IT middle managers are incompetent and simply horrible.
Projects routinely go over budget due to bad management decisions. This leads to frustration and added pressure.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart listening to the people doing actual development.
Don't trust what middle management is telling you. Go look for yourself.
Remember most project managers are playing games with you and not being honest.

    Feedback

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat bonus and benefits, easy commute.

ConsPoor work life balance as bonus based on meeting team goals that were not always achievable. Bonus incentives lead to poor management decisions (quick improvement in the bottom line without full consideration of the risks).
Manager more interested in "face time" (working late) and politics without regard for the actual number of hours worked.
    HR department very unprofessional.

Advice to Senior ManagementEvaluate your real intentions. I think the management is there to make a buck for themselves without regard to the employees.
