I have been working at FIRST

organization still needs to expand on outreach to develop more programs for kids in the underserved areas

  2. FIRST is a non-profit run by great people working hard to make a difference in STEM workforce development.

I worked at FIRST as a contractor

    Pros

You will be making a difference in a child's life by bringing industry professionals face to face as mentors. The opportunity to work with C level management in tech companies and work with educators in the K-12 sector as well as the opportunity to be face to face with students is a nice trifecta for job satisfaction.

    Cons

FIRST headquarters staff are good people, but always resource constrained. You can stay in your position as long as you want, but if you are looking for someone to manage and grow you professionally, you will not receive any development or input from your manager.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management should better manage and invest in their talent both at headquarters and in the field.

    I worked at FIRST full-time

    Pros

it is a good cause and has the ability to influence student's lives and their careers.

    Cons

The department I was in was unprofessional and unwilling to change their outdated, disorganized methodologies. The company is going nowhere and many coaches have commented that the will not be participating in the future because it is so difficult to deal with the systems FIRST has in place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

restructure the organization and get rid of those unwilling to step into the 21st century.

I worked at FIRST full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Meeting people, helping kids get excited about STEM

    Cons

Say goodbye to your life. Don't expect that your head work will be recognized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get it together and pay your staff what they are worth.

I worked at FIRST full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Believes they are impacting the future of the US. Most co workers were friendly. Free coffee, food and drinks. Fun trips to places

    Cons

Scatter brained management. As I moved from one dept to another it was clear that they their goals were not aligned, mostly what ever they wanted and even were competitive with each other. Few things were standardized or run as a business. Some of the 4 programs cross over the student's ages and are going after the same students.

The new President (an MIT PhD) thinks he's the smartest guy in the company and has started getting rid of people who don't agree with him. The board paid for an agreed to one strategy last year, he came in and came up with a different strategy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Come together as a team. Stop second guessing employees.

I worked at FIRST full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Dean Kamen's STEM driven nonprofit...robots...kids...teachers and big corporate sponsors. BOD is like a Fortune 500 C level group.

    Cons

OMG...sooo political in the office, field directors . Everyone is well intentioned, but watch your back. Lots of turnovers in staff , but also hiring and growing. Depending on the department, it is either well managed or chaotic.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your staff, dont play favorites, good ideas come from all levels, internally and externally. Hold the leadership team accountable for their performance, not their staff.

I worked at FIRST full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good mission, but really disconnected from reality of local schools and students

    Cons

Soooo highly political, mostly good people, but many have hidden agendas around their program or area they support

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't make the same mistake of past President and "kill the golden goose". Get whole team focused on one mission, not many missions, improve communication with all employees, not a special few

I worked at FIRST full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Great to support a good cause, working with LEGO and so many amazing kids and dedicated volunteers.

    Cons

Leadership does not practice "Gracious Professionalism" as they preach to through their programs. Leadership does not value innovation. No room for growth. Pay is low. Employee appreciation is very low.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Get over yourself.
