Pros
high salaries for the area; clean; good benifits; Alternate Work Week Schedule; high priority in safety and human performance
Cons
there has been many owners at Point Beach so always re-structuring. Senior management doesn't seem to be as involved at the site levels as it should be. FPL/Next Era Energy who is the owner and corporate, does not involve the team members and co-workers at the site levels when changing/creating processes, minimal input from sites when going through change. Prior owners involved employees, took feedback to use, etc. Absolutely no training oppourtunities or minimal training budget set aside for employees that want to grow, keep abreast of new things, or help maintain their systems they may be responsible for.
Advice to Senior Management
I think I saw him once on the front page of a newsletter - I can not answer this fairly. I know he reaches out and tries best to communicate and leverages technology to do so. Not many at this level maintain a BLOG for their employees.
Pros
Understand their work force and where they are going
Cons
Hours at time could be hard on fami;y
Pros
The pension plan is good and the matching portion of their 401k plan is awesome. Also, the education assistance program is very generous.
Cons
The pay for customer service type jobs is lousy. To advance your career you have to live in Miami, West Palm Beach, or Juno. What FPL pays for the stellar perfomance of their customer service employees is not dovetailed with their contribution to the business.
Advice to Senior Management
Come down from the ivory tower and get up close and personal with what your employees really do everyday. Wake up!
Pros
The culture here at FPL attends to the whole person. The company supports your health and respects your time for family and leisure. There is an appreciation for working hard and playing hard. In my group especially, there is an underlying respect and appreciation shown for each others contributions. In the five years I have been here, I have yet to encounter the backbiting that I hear occurs at some other large corporations.
Cons
As a public company in a governmentally regulated industry, we follow a lot of guidelines strictly. I happen to have an avid appreciation for this, however, i can see people whom may not be as disciplined or those whom may prefer more freedoms and lattitudes not being as comfortable.
Advice to Senior Management
Our leadership does an excellent job in steering the helm of our company further towards success. We have a lot of sensationalistic stories get published about us in our local paper, but at the end of the day, I feel our company continues to do what's best for our rate payers, shareholders and employees.
Pros
FPL is a good company because one of their main focus is safety. They also have very good benefits. Job satisfaction is also of importance.
Cons
FPL Group requires long hours and maybe even weekends whenever there is a storm. That makes it difficult when you have a family. But that is only on the salaried side.
Advice to Senior Management
I think FPL Group does a really good job at retaining their employees and making them happy. Overall, they are a good company.
Pros
benefits
pay
life/work balance
most of the management are well versed on their fields
open communication
Cons
might be a bit difficult to move around departments if you are not very agreesively pursuing it on a constant basis
Advice to Senior Management
it is easier if you start as your first job and you are young to actually get to move up as it takes time.
Pros
Great opportunity for career mobility. They usually look within before hiring from the outside. There are a lot of great people working with you. They have an on-site cafeteria and gym. Work/life balance is pretty good. You have the ability to leave if you have something to go do during the day.
Cons
Management picks are usually those that make great leads in their departments, but not great managers. The great minds seemed to be ignored by the pride of management. There is no paid overtime or time compensation for overtime, which I guess is usual. You are expected to work overtime and management says you will be rewarded with your bonus, which is not true on the most part.
Advice to Senior Management
Think about the whole picture. Managers tend to focus on their specific department rather than all the managers working together towards one corporate goal.
Pros
Living in sunny South Florida.
Cons
Compensation does not meet the market.
Advice to Senior Management
Reward those that get the job done.
