I have been working at FTI Consulting full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The pay is decent. The medical and 401k benefits are competitive. Some of the people you work with are really nice people..

    Cons

The only way to get any promotion is to go out drinking with your boss. Friends and golf buddies are promoted and rewarded ahead of all others. Raises and compensation are skewed similarly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As if you'd listen anyway...as long as a profit is being turned, management does not care what happens to the employees.

    Pros

FTI pays quite well, has great benefits, understanding management, and high profile engagements to work on.

    Cons

Although management is very understanding and great to work with, the Work/Life Balance is pretty awful (as is with most other firms in the industry).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to reward their staff in greater amount for loyalty and efficiency. They should also work on developing their consultants / senior consultants by cycling on and off engagements with different scopes of work.

    Pros

This is an excellent company to work for. The tasks are challenging, the people are terrific, and compensation is outstanding. Plus the external perception of FTI is positive.

    Cons

Being in Times Square isn't the best.

    Pros

Autonomy was the deciding factor. Super. Day 1, was like being in the military. I suspect things have changed since I left, I don't hear much about them at all.

    Cons

If you're not a lawyer, CPA, Banker, Economist, graduated from an Ivy League school or made a lateral move from a competitor, run for your life! Cruel place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Profitable or not .... be aware of the culture you are at the helm of. I often wonder if CEO's, Investors, Board Members, and/or Executives read these reviews. Because they would benefit the most.

Flexible work schedule, but corporate politics prevail.

I worked at FTI Consulting as a contractor

    Pros

Flexible work schedule; salary paid on time
The employees who worked on other projects were very friendly.

    Cons

My supervisor suffered from a Napoleon complex. He praised the subordinates who lacked the qualifications, prior work experience and motivation necessary to perform the job because they did not pose a threat to him, while attacking and degrading the subordinates who excelled and went above and beyond duty to get the job done. He also lacked professional experience in the relevant field and, consequently, was very insecure. However, since he was hired at the onset of the project, he was promoted to a supervisory position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize the employees who consistently produce high-quality results. Do not promote employees solely on the basis of the number of years they have been working at FTI or their relationship with senior managers. Bottom line: Performance is more important than corporate politics.

I have been working at FTI Consulting full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I work in Technology and 95% of the people are incredibly smart and driven. You learn a lot from an incredibly talented group of people (wish they did a better job of making them want to stay). There are only a very small handful of duds. You can work from home in this department which is fantastic as you can travel and not take PTO (this is a double edged sword because you're available to work pretty much anywhere). They have offices in almost every major city and there are opportunities to travel if you ask. If you prefer not to travel, there's no pressure to do so.
Culture is pretty good, people are very nice and will go out of their way to help you learn. But there is not much camaraderie once you leave the office.
There is an emphasis to take PTO and enjoy it while you're out. However, it can be hard to manage a "good" time to take it.
Promotion structure is a pro and con. The pro is that there aren't limited amount of upper management positions. If you deserve to be promoted, you don't need to wait for a position to be vacated.

    Cons

Promotion Cons: they emphasize 2 year minimum between promotions, but that leaves you with no incentive to work hard in a non-promotion year. Very few get promoted early, and usually FTI promotes 1 year later than it should. You have to do the work of a level higher for a year before they promote you to that level. Promotion cycles leave a bitter taste in your mouth.
Pay is below average, especially for NYC. Raises are very small, pay bumps for promotions is very underwhelming, and annual bonus is very little compared to other companies - and I've received great reviews for my level. Depending on the project, work life balance can be very difficult. You never know what time work will end and working on weekends (for a handful of hours) is pretty standard. You will constantly be on your blackberry at all hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recruitment is top notch, do a better job retaining that talent. Seen way too many incredibly smart and driven people leave because they are mismanaged and underpaid. Put together a better compensation package and raise structure to make people want to stay.

I have been working at FTI Consulting

    Pros

There is really not much positive as a place to work and establish a long term employment

    Cons

There are so many narcist with little to no respect for others. Management is so focused on internal politics rather than getting the work done. Their technology practice wants to make a product and turn the practice into a product company. They will never achieve that with the current leadership with too much lawyer mentality. They only know the legal business and how to charge more hours to the clients.
